US issues robbery warning for Cambodia travellers

The US State Department has issued a fresh travel advisory for Cambodia, warning Americans to exercise increased caution amid crime, unrest and unexploded ordnance. The Level 2 alert, published on 15 September, highlights risks in Phnom Penh and several provinces, while parts of the Cambodian‑Thai border carry the highest Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning.

Officials have urged visitors not to physically resist robbery attempts, stressing that violent crime remains a serious concern. The advisory also recommends purchasing comprehensive travel insurance, including evacuation and medical coverage.

Specific provinces flagged for danger include Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, Preah Vihear and Kampong Thom, where unexploded ordnance continues to pose a threat. Phnom Penh is singled out for its high crime rate, with tourists advised to remain vigilant.

The guidance also reiterates Cambodia’s strict drug laws. Possessing even small amounts of illegal substances can lead to arrest, lengthy prison sentences or life imprisonment. Travellers are warned not to accept drinks from strangers or leave beverages unattended, as crimes targeting tourists often involve drugged drinks.

Cambodia, which borders Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, remains a popular destination for visitors drawn to sites such as Angkor Wat and Koh Rong Island. But the advisory underscores that safety risks persist despite the country’s appeal.

The State Department’s blunt advice reflects growing concern over security conditions. For Americans planning trips, the message is clear: take precautions, avoid high‑risk areas, and be prepared for emergencies.
