Car insurance for 80 year old and up

ChatGPT points out that some Thai motor insurers impose upper-age limits on drivers, although there does not appear to be a general Thai-law prohibition on an elderly person owning or insuring a private vehicle.

Examples:

* Roojai: the principal driver must be 20–70 years old and hold a valid licence; therefore, a person over 70 may not qualify as the principal insured driver for its standard motor products. ([roojai.com][1])

* Bangkok Insurance: offers a specialised Type 1 “Oonjai Wai Kao” senior-driver policy for drivers aged 55–75. The stated range is an eligibility condition for that particular product, not necessarily a company-wide prohibition on drivers over 75. ([กรุงเทพประกันภัย][2])

* Other traditional insurers may accept drivers over 70 or 75, particularly on individually underwritten or renewal policies, but their online quotation systems may decline them or require referral to an underwriter.

The important distinctions are:

1. Owner: There is normally no upper age limit simply for being the registered vehicle owner or policyholder.

2. Insured/named driver: An insurer may impose an age limit under its own underwriting rules.

3. Compulsory insurance — Por Ror Bor: This attaches primarily to the vehicle and protects road-accident victims. I found no general maximum age for the vehicle owner or driver. It is mandatory for registered vehicles. ([Easy to buy online][3])

4. Voluntary Type 1, 2+, 3+, etc.: This is where insurer-specific age restrictions, premiums, excesses or referral requirements may apply.

5. Personal-accident benefits: Even where the vehicle’s third-party and own-damage cover remains valid, the policy’s personal-accident or medical benefits for the driver may contain separate age limitations.

At age 70, you remain within Roojai’s published range, but a policy renewal after turning 71 could be problematic. I would obtain written confirmation covering these exact questions before renewal:

> Please confirm that the policy remains fully valid while the principal/named driver is aged 71 or older, including own-damage, third-party liability, personal-accident, medical-expense and driver-bail benefits.

Also confirm whether the age test applies when the policy starts, at the next renewal, or on the date of an accident. That distinction can be important.

Many thanks for your sensible input . I have just spoken to our insurer ( Roojai ) who have told me and confirmed by email that there is no upper age limit on their any driver policy . Only the car owner / main named driver has to be under 70 years of age . Our policy is 1st class insurance for any driver aged 30 years or above .

Power to the seniors 👍💪and 🖕to our critics . 😁

Whoa …quite a stretch there! I am the same chronological age as trump but in no regard as impaired as he is … conditions vary widely depending on the individual. Your broad brush is not valid.

Surprised it took so long for the first anti-Trump post of the thread. He lives rent free in the head of a lot of people.

I was insured by Roojai for nearly 10 years and after having my first motor accident ever Roojai notified me they would not be offering me a renewal....75 years of age so beware they are not all they make out to be.

My wife was driving her car when she was hit by an old Thai farmer riding his very old and shoddy motor cycle . He had no insurance and the police fined him 400 baht which he didn't have . The police gave him a lecture and let him go . The repairs were met by Roojai without any wriggling .

In your case was the accident caused by you ? Even if so it seems a bit harsh to refuse your renewal . Did you get a new insurance with another company , if so was the cover and cost comparable ?

I'm really grateful that this topic was raised. After looking into my own (Roojai) Policy a little more, I learned a few things that I didn't know before. Initially, I purchased a car and insured it as 'Type 1'. I always select the best insurance cover - so automatically went directly to Type 1 (and its policy elements). Today I was interested to see that if (for example), you initially obtained Type 2 cover (and din't review it before renewing every year), your cover would cease at age 70. Cover ceases at age 75 under Type 1. It does raise the question as to whether there is any advantage in dropping Roojai, moving to another insurer that does not have ageist restrictions (after all, if you hold a valid Driver's Licence, you should be insurable) - and building up a good track record with that new insurer (I have been driving for over 50 years and have never once had an accident). Food for thought, anyway .....Screenshot 2026-09-25 at 11.08.08 AM.png

An interesting detail re flood damage. Roojai Type 1 cover provides flood protection:

Finally - another interesting Roojai policy detail relates to detection of trace amounts of alcohol following an accident (when creating your policy you are offered an option to select zero alcohol, or trace alcohol detection options). Good to be aware of. ChatGPT's summary (which may or may not be accurate - but a good prompt for inquiry of Roojai nonetheless) is provided below:

Update: ChatGPT was not entirely correct re Roojai policy age limits. If you have Type 1 Roojai cover, the age limit rises to 75.
