Recommended Hotels In Chiang Mai?

I know plenty of the TV forum either live in Chiang Mai or have visited so can anyone recommend a hotel to stay within the city that has good facilities? I have been a couple of times before & once stopped at a hotel by the side of the Ping river & another time at a place I thnk was called "The Royal Orchid" next to the Central shopping center. If anybody has any others that they thought was great I'd like to know & hopefully book in the near future.

depends what you required empress nice handy for night market nice rooms pool okay chiang mai orchid good handy for everywere chiang mai view good but out of town by central you have quite a good choice now in cnx from very expensive to boarding houses

I noticed that Novotel has some amazing prices, 900 Baht/night, bookable online...never stayed there, but hey, it can't be bad...the reviews for it are decent, too.

Thanks for the response guys, I'll take a look at all suggestions. I will be going around the new year period so will expect a premium on the rooms at that time of year.
