US jails man for sex with Thai minors

An American man who worked as an English teacher in Bangkok was sentenced today to 10 years in federal prison for travelling to Thailand to have sex with children. Steven Erik Prowler, 58, pleaded guilty Feb 21 to one count each of traveling abroad with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and illicit sexual contact with a minor in a foreign place. In pleading guilty, Prowler admitted that he had oral sex with a boy he knew was about 15 in April 2005. Prowler paid the 15-year-old boy 200 baht (about $6), according to his plea agreement. He also acknowledged engaging in sex acts with minors during another trip to Thailand the previous year. The sentence sends "a strong message to predators who might be tempted to commit sex crimes overseas that there will be a high price to pay for their actions," said Robert Schoch, special agent in charge for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement office of investigations in Los Angeles.

LA man sentenced to 10 years in prison for sex with Thai minors

LOS ANGELES - Officials say a Los Angeles man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for traveling to Thailand to engage in illicit sexual activity with minors.

Steven Prowler had already served a year in prison in Thailand for molesting teenage boys when he was deported and forced to face charges in the United States in May 2006.

Federal prosecutors say he pleaded guilty in February to federal charges of traveling abroad with the intent to have sex with a minor and to engaging in illicit sexual conduct with minors in another country.

Prosecutors say in pleading guilty, Prowler acknowledged paying a 15-year-old boy about $6 to engage in sexual acts in April 2005.

Prowler had faced up to 60 years in prison.

It's just too bad the Thai government doesn't take more of an interest in those scum balls.

What is wrong with US law enforcement. Do they not know Thailand is not The US? Anyone who breaks Thai law should be prosecuted in Thailand.

Yes, Robert Schoch, special agent is garbage.

This is a very sensitive subject, and on ThaiVisa these threads don't last long.

But can you see the anguish in that guys face?

I wonder what ever happened to him when he was a kid, is he just a victim himself ?

I think this thread should be closed for obvious reasons.

Unfortunate in the fact that he worked as an English teacher ... linking the two terms together, paedophile and English teacher gives the vast majority of hard-working, caring English teachers in Bangkok a bad name.

No, he wont be sectioned as that is a term used under the MHA (Mental Health Act), unless he is deemed mentally ill and placed into a secure hospital. It is likely though, that he will placed into a VP unit, affectionately known as the nonce wing, but if that is full 9which is often the case) he'll end up in the healthcare centre.

Of course, administration mistakes do happen, and from time to time these people do end up being in the wrong place, which is not a pleasant experience for them.

no I'm saying that most of the posters are as bad as he is if they propound their barbaric and unjustified suggestions - do you really go round "bashing" people????/

It took hundreds of years (not to mention blood sweat and tears) for the west to develop it's systems of justice complete with checks and balances - where were you when all this was happened.

"Bashing" is called assault in most countries and is illegal -

Yes, Robert Schoch, special agent is garbage.

He was not sentenced in the USA for acts commited on Thai soil. He was sentenced for his actions in the USA, namely, formulating the intent to commit the acts and then purchasing travel to facilitate the commision of those acts. This is one of the core features of the PROTECT Act of 2003 and applies to both international and interstate travel.

Of course there's no need to let the facts get in the way of a good session of mouth-breathing and knee-jerking...

Looked at rainmans link and its not him.

do you go round bashing people? no.

The guy I am talking about was stalking an 8 year old girl In Cambodia and she was cornered behind a car hiding from him and terrified. What would you have done?

Sure in western countries you would not do this as it would not be happening in the first place. Personally I ever see what I was witnessing happening again I would do the same.

As for most countries, well maybe its illegal, but in Cambodia with just cause such as this or theft its perfectly legal.

Whatsmore, had it have been motivated locals they would have killed him instead.

Just to clarify--a pedophile is considered someone who is sexually attracted to children--pre-pubescent children generally 12 and younger. Most pedophiles will loose interest in children as they become teenagers and start to look like adults.

So the technical term for this guy is not pedophile--it is SCUMBAG. From the Latin scum.

The thing that amazes me is that someone would have sex with a 15 year-old Thai when so many 18 year-old Thais look 15! So I guess it is not so much about the look as somthing else twisted in the mind of this guy.

The US system is a bit more brutal. Not excusing what the guy did, but responsibility of the state is to treat prisoners in a human way regardless of his crime.

Here's an interesting website on the state of prisons in the US, and the things that bloke is most likely going to have to endure.

Accordingto your twisted logic then you beathim up to protect him from the locals
