Front Panel Audio Connections

Featured Replies

Hi All

I recently installed a new motherboard ASUS P5VD2-MX SE in my old tower using the origional connections to the front panel. All works fine except the audio connections.

From the front panel I have 4 wires coming these end in a plug that fits neatly into the new board socket but unfortunately it does not work either the mike nor the h/phones.

The wires from the front panel are marked - GND – Mike In – Spk-R – Spk-L the socket on the MB has 9 pins non of which makes sense to me except the GND.

Anyone help me identify the correct pins to connect.

Thanks :o

PORT1L = Mic 1 GND=Ground

PORT1R = MIC 2 Presences = Power for Mic (if need)

PORT2R = Audio Right to Front Panel (R-Out) Sense1 = Retur (not use if not a cable from Fornt Panel eg. R-In)

Sense = Send NOT used

PORT2L = Audio Left to Front Panel (L-Out) Sense2 = Retur (not use if not a cable from Fornt Panel eg. L-In)

Check the Cable! Normally PORT2R and Sense1 are short with Jumper if not use of Front Panel, and PORT2L and Sense2 are short with Jumper if not use of Front Panel

Update for those interested.

I tried the connections as “Reimar” suggested but no combination worked.

Having tried just about everything I could think of had to finally admit that all else had failed and it was time to “read the instructions” so to speak.

The ASUS web site is pretty well laid out, once you put in your particular part number all following searches only throw up stuff relating to your part so don't have to wade through lots of unrelated stuff.

It seems I was not the only one having front panel audio connection problems and the answer is to change a setting in the advanced BIOS chipset.

Did that and all is working fine now.

Just thought I’d share that with you.

Hi Daffy,

Your Problem is that your Case has a AC97-Audio Standard Dongle, bud your Mainboard use HD-Audio Standard. Additional has Port 1 a lower sensibility (Line Level).

The HD-Audio Dongle use additional Contacts to signal a Plug in.

This Function is not available on a AC97-Dongle.

Similar with the Description from Reimar.

HD-AUDIO CONNECTOR

Pin Description

--------------------------------------

1 Port1 Left

2 Ground

3 Port1 Right

4 Presence

5 Port2 Right

6 Sense1 Return

7 Sens Send

8 nc

9 Port2 Left

10 Sens2 Return

To Simulate a Plug in, connect with a Jumper on the Mainboard Connector:

Pin 7 with Pin 6 (Sens1)

Pin 7 with Pin 10 (Sens2)

Pin 4 to Pin 2 with Resistor 1 kOhm. (Presence)

To switch between the Sources, use Windows Settings.

Good luck
