Yes, I read this article when I checked my Yahoo email..

Does anyone know how Thailand rated last year? I know Nong Khai got the thumbs up as a nice place to retire, but what about LoS in general?

That's interesting, because it was just today I received a full price offer on some oceanfront property I own in Mexico. It was from a Canadian. Maybe the combination of Canadas strong currency and Mexico getting some good press, is what brought it about. Anyway, I travelled and sometimes lived there for 30 years. It has lost whatever allure it once held for me.

To be completely honest, one of the best things about Thailand is the price. How many of the retirees in Thailand would be here if they were worth millions and millions? Some would, but many wouldn't. Bang for your buck, Thailand is ahead of the pack, but overall quality of living, not so much.

That's true, don't see too many Movie Stars wanting to live in Pattaya.

in thailand you soak the culture - some african or south american countries you live an a guarded ghetto, separated by the wall from the local population. Maybe you can get cheap private beach - but can't walk on the town streets after dark.

I wiuld say thet good and cheap medical care is an incentive for the elderly folks

It is official.

Australia is better than Thailand.

USA and UK are worse than both.

Something we Australian have long known. :o

Australia is OK ,its just the people there that make it bad overall ,plus the cost of living .

Thats because theyre all in Samui and Phuket.

I didnt realise it is only the opinions of the super rich that decide where is a good place to live or retire.

Good for a bit of fun...

But, sorry can't take seriously the people behind the survey. Would have loved to see the real calculations and table behind it and how they really measured it. A lot of the descriptions say ..."and based on our own experience".... when arriving at a % weighting

They have another survey rating France No.1 for Quality of life. Funny enough by iteslf I think. But they go further when they talk about the downsides in France and don't even mention the French :o

Surprised about South Africa's high position,I thought the high level of crime would be a deterrent

Look where they live & the amount of security they surround themselves with. It really wouldn't surprise me if halfof them didn't realise aparthied was finished years ago !

for some of us (like me) it's not the price only but the huge advantage not to give away a big share of the income to the taxman. if you are well off it means living in Thailand is completely free of charge because of tax savings AND there is still money left to burn. on top of that there are some things most of us just can't afford in an industrialized country.

best examples: having domestic employees or building your dream home for the price of a studio apartment in a posh location of London, New York, Paris, Munich or San Francisco. the "humble dwelling" that i built in a gated community of Pattaya would have cost me in my home country Germany approximately €UR 2.5 million cost of land NOT included!

as far as overall quality of living is concerned i only miss the speed and reliabilty of internet connection, the several hundred TV-channels and the four seasons. everything else is available and can be bought with freaking money.

of course they are because they don't take any individual priorities into consideration.

Mexico as #1, what a joke. Unlike mexico, Thailand doesn't have an open killing and mugging season on tourists or expats. True, there are many advantages to mexico, but #1, no way. Someone cooked the results. Panama fell from top spot because it tightened retirement visas and land access is not a free for all anymore. If anything that should have boosted Panama's standing. Thailand could take a hint. Surprised to see Costa Rica missing. Suspect that in 2-3 years Vietnam will be up there: fairly clean, crime is under control. Also suprising Canada didn't make any of the lists such as quality of life etc. Some Canadian cities have the lowest costs of living compared to other big cities without the pollution or crime. Montreal's strip clubs make Thailand's girli bars look tame. It's a big city with the charm of Europe, but the low costs (and sadly. the community services) of a 3rd world country.

Ireland 27th top place to retire????????

but

best place in the world to live

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4020523.stm

So, Ireland is great if you're Irish, but lousy if you're a foreigner looking for somewhere to retire? :D :D

Does that make the Irish even more xenophobic than the Thais? :D

Or maybe these surveys are total <deleted>. :o

Of course the Irish aren't xenophobic. My son migrated there and they love him. Lovely place to retire if you have the cash, don't mind rain, and can stand the long winter nights. Very expensive, though, as someone else mentioned.

Since Mexico is #1, it's likely the Yanks and Canadians weighed heavily in the survey. I'm thinking of retiring there, again. And no, Mexico does not have an open season for killing and mugging tourists, and Thailand is not free from that ghastly practice, either.

Yes, International Living is biased towards the American market. They rate based on many factors including cost factors, visas, and quality of life. Costa Rica has become quite expensive and they abolished some of their expat friendly laws, they were becoming too popular they thought. Vietnam: no retirement visa option. Canada: no retirement visa option. Canada is also no longer cheap for Americans, both dollars are almost at parity.

Aggree.

What are the parameters here?

Does living in mexico City includes this?

Every year UN issues out a list of the so called best countries to live in.

This list is based upon a huge amount of parameters.

For many years now, Canada and Norway have been alternating 1st and 2nd on this list.

I would believe that countries topping this list would be among the top countries to retire in as well.

yeah right Highdiver! a neigbour of mine has internet via satellite. when i was recently complaining about Maxnet he told me a few clouds and raindrops forces him to use dial-up. made a similar experience when i had sat-internet in the mid 90s.

besides Maxnet i got since three weeks TOT on my other fixed line. compared with my experience with Maxnet i am jumping every day with joy. TOT is faster than Maxnet and it works 23 hours and 50 minutes a day. Maxnet works 1 hour OK and IS RUBBISH 23 HOURS A DAY. when you call the call center or complain in the office located in Carrefour you are bullsh*tted that much that you have to take a long hot shower to get rid of the stink. :o

Loxinfo website is in thai only. will try to contact them in their office. hopefully i find somebody who speaks a language i understand. i am not sure whether Loxinfo needs a TOT or TT&T line. anyway, i have both. but whatever nominal speed any provider claims or might provide from my home to their server has no real influence on the bottle-necked speed once you "leave" Thailand for international websites (so i've been told by the experts in this forum).

i am after the "company in Bangkok" to get my third satellite TV-connection since several months. after half a dozen enquiries through internet and a few phone calls they promised a site survey. (i think) that was end of may. still waiting...

and no, i did not mean the "Four Seasons" on Samui. i meant chilly mornings, looking through the windows from the inside of a well-heated house and watching with slight amusement how the neighbours are trying walk on an icy or slushy driveway to the mailbox :D

for the retiree the 3 seasons in thailand are more suitable - no hypothermia (some 30k dieing from it in the UK alone every single winter), no flu jabs, no broken limbs and sprained ankles and wrists, no arthritis

there might be up and downs of water in the khlong - but than there are boats to visit your neighbour or do shopping
