Flew budget for the first time last month BKK-SING-BKK Baht 4500 including all taxes and it was suprisingly good. But the 3000 Baht return including all taxes deal with Tiger was simply too tempting to give it a pass. So, I booked with them for my next trip to Singapore. Question: What are Tiger like?

Flown SIN-BKK-SIN and PER-SIN with them...they're OK - your basic no-frills airline, food drink has to be paid for, not much baggage allowance, fairly small seats.

Singapore Airlines owns them and apparently all their planes are fairly new, the ones I travelled on seemed new.

They are fine. Low cost, but no problems. I have flown Perth - Sing - Udon, and then Udon - Sing - Perth return.

A few things to remember however:

- if you are tall I would suggest paying the Sing$25 fee to guarantee your own (emergency exit) seat. Rows 12 and 13.

- they are a point to point airline. If you are flying to Sing from somewhere, and then onto somewhere else, you will need to collect your baggage and go through Sing immigration and customs, and then check-in again for the next flight. The inward and outward Budget Terminals in Sing are in different buildings, so there is a short walk (with your baggage) of about 100m. Facilities in the Outward Terminal are fine, with a good and relatively cheap restaurant in the terminal prior to check-in, and then plenty of shopping once inside the departure area after check-in.

- they do not include the Thai departure tax in their ticket cost - you need to pay this when you check-in at your Thai departure point.

- they are generally pretty strict on baggage allowances (15kg check-in, 7kg carry-on + laptop if you have one)

And a bonus - the trolley dollies are generally verrry easy on the eye.

I'll second that. Tiger practically breaks out the gram scale to check your baggage weight. Tiger does offer a way to upsize your baggage allowance at a much discounted rate when you purchase your ticket (by 5 kg, 10 kg, or 15 kg). Worth considering if you know that you will be traveling "heavy".

Paying the premium for the emergency exit seats good idea for longer flights. I'm just shy of 6' tall and my knees always bump up against the seat in front of mine.

I'm pretty comfortable with safety due to the new fleet and relationship with SIA.

My main complaint is with the poor level of training for the hostesses. They could use some pointers about how to avoid being rude and overly bossy when explaining rules -- no children at any time in emergency exits, pay attention to saftey instructions while seated in emergency exit row, etc.

For that reason, I will always go with Jetstar Asia, a Quantas sub I believe, if there's a choice. Only a small premium. The seats are more comfortable and service much more pleasant, though the fleet is older. Overall much better service.

The service difference between the two is much less now since in the early days. Before last summer, Tiger was using a first come, first served seating policy which meant lining up 30-45 minutes before departure and fighting an aggressive crowd while boarding. Jetstar always used pre-assigned seating.

Tiger is the lowest of the low. You get what you paid for. The nice cheerful but underpaid staff make up for it. And assigned seating helps. I swore off Tiger when I was almost hit by a flying water bottle hurled by this passenger behind me to "book her seat".

The downsight of Tiger is that they use the Budget Terminal (the winning name chosen in a $250,000 contest). That place is the cesspot of Changi Airport. None of your usual Singapore efficency. The baggage takes years to arrive when even in T1, your bags are waiting for you 10min max after landing. The immigration idiots make it a point to check EVERYONE so forget about sneaking cigarettes, porn or sex toys through your check in luggage. This causes very very long lines esp around peak hours. And the taxi queues makes the ones in Suvarnabhumi look like express lanes.

I'm with Loom.... Jetstar serves wine (by the can), black leather seats and I get to enjoy the better facilities in T1. They have my money if I ever fly budget to BKK.

Yes, never at a loss for things to do in the "T" terminals while you can count the number of shops in the Budget Terminal on one hand. If departing from the Budget Terminal, the restaurant before entering immigration to the left has the best menu (there are limited options once inside). I never give it a miss due to the warnings they give you in flight not to eat anything unless it's something they are selling. They've never confronted me for eating something that I've brought from outside, but it's just another thing that makes the flight less comfortable.

Hmmm!..........certainly not my experience. In fact the Budget terminal is brand new, so "cesspot" (sic) is not my memory of it.

As Tiger and Cebu Pacific are the only airlines currently using the terminal, I am not quite sure what happens at peak hours. My experience was an average wait of about 10 minutes for my bags. This was after passing through Immigration in under 5 minutes - well within normal international airport standards in my extensive travels.

The efficient Customs officers, who are paid to check baggage, in contrast to Immigration who check passports, X-rayed my baggage on 1 out of 3 trips. Disappointingly for them no doubt, I had neither cigarettes, porn nor sex toys, so passed through quickly. I also noted that no more than 50% of passengers were also subject to similar screening.

You can also get (canned) wine on Tiger. However my preference is for the bottled variety, and as I was traveling very cheaply on a budget airline, I was able to forgive them for that.

As the old saying goes - your mileage may vary!

I flew Jetstar last month and I will fly Tiger next month.

I will try and report back next month in here with a little comparison between the two and my experiences with the two airlines and Changi Terminal 1 and Chnagi Terminal 3.

Just flew Tiger yesterday to Phuket.

Can't complain for the price but they are sticklers about being overweight on the luggage. It was early morning so the Immigration lines weren't too bad, certainly not as many agents as Terminal 1 tho. The Budget terminal is very small with minimal amenities but who cares? I did not hang out in the Budget terminal, merely went there to check-in and get on the plane. No seating at the gates but that is hardly Tiger Air's fault.

The plane was new, everything cost. I went without, didn't seem to matter on a one hour flight.

What can you say? Its a budget airline, I can hardly expect great service on a budget airline.

Tiger , I would rank it 3rd among the 3 budget airlines: Airasia 1st, Jetstar 2nd and last tiger.

Why?

Airasia stewardess are polite and extremely joyful, they dress well and are nicely poised. Jetstar staffs are polite, although looks amatuear. Tiger staffs are horrendous, in terms of dresses (might be the uniform) and there has been multiple reports of rudeness by tigerair staff (from the straits times newspaper in Singapore)

2 accounts has been posted on the forum section of the straits times about the bad behaviour of Tiger Airways staffs.

1) One occasion when the chinese speaking passenger seemed losted on sitting arrangements, spoke in mandrian to 1 of the stewardess. In digust, the stewardess replied to her in ENGLISH "CHINESE SPEAKING PLEASE MOVE TO THE BACK"

2) Outside food are not allowed on budget flights, but i do understand that some passengers still bring regardless. I have seen some bought chips up, in jetstar, but normally the staff just keeps qiuet and turns a blind eye to it.

However on this account on TIGER airways, a passenger bought a bun up the flight and took it out to consume. the stewardess not only didnt politely remind the passenger that outside food is not allowed to be consumed, she snatched the bun from the passenger and hurled it into the white plastic trashbag she was holding.

Being a budget airline, it seems that the training and QC of the staffs of tiger are being budgetted too.

Also the tiger staffs stutters terribly over the PA system, maybe a new recruit or something.

Give me thai airasia anytime!

2. Baggage (over)weight is Tiger's way of getting more money from you. I saw a group of five who were refused to weigh their bags as a group. Each bag had to be identified and weighed seperately, and the excess weight charged accordingly. Of course, no credit for underweight bags.

3. Food on board is another money source and they make sure the message sinks in...repeated warnings of no outside food allowed on board.

4. Bear in mind that Tiger's BKK-SIN or SIN-BKK flight schedule gets you into SIN close to midnight, which means a 50% surcharge on your cab fare, and leaves SIN early in the morning...again a 50% surcharge on your cab fare. (No prize for guessing that Tiger and the major cab company are owned by the same people.)

Now you know.

actually, it's already included. Although for a moment in the eariler times it wasn't.

My flight BKK-SIN via tigerair last week had the 700thb included.

Nevertheless, although cheap and budget, they should still enforce some QC guidelines on the attitude and training of the staffs.

The poise of some of the stewardess, and the way they bring themselves, make them look more like ticketers at the bus interchange rather den a airline crew.

I get the impression that these attitudes are deliberate on the part of Tiger's parent company, Singapore Airlines. The last time I flew Tiger (from Singapore to Chiang Mai), the check-in agent at the Changi Airport budget terminal was giving me grief because my carry-on bag was two kilograms over the 7 kg limit (on a flight that was 70% empty). I complained a bit and the Tiger agent's verbatim response was "If you want better service, fly one of the airlines from [Changi] Terminal 1 or Terminal 2". :o

Reading this topic l wonder if there are two Tiger Airlines. I have flown the Singapore- Bangkok route about 30 times with Tiger without a problem. The planes leave on time ... unlike AirAsia. While l don't select an airline on how cute the staff look l have to say l find the Tiger female staff very attractive in their casual style uniforms.

Singapore Changi Airport is very efficient and so to is the budget terminal. You can turn up for your flight even later than the main airport and immigration is a breeze. Some of you must be very suspicious looking characters if you're encountering problems with either customs or immigration. :o Maybe some of you want the budget terminal to be a shopping centre with an airport attached like Suvarnabhumi. I'll take the Singapore budget terminal over Suvarnabhumi anyday.

I'm only guessing but it seems a few posters here who dislike Tiger so much are Thai or Thai-Chinese who love to hate anything Singaporean these days.

I must be lucky then because l haven't paid any departure tax at the airport since early this year and l doubt anyone else has either unless their ticket was booked a long way in advance.

I would suppose that bags have to be identified separately for security reasons if nothing else. If you are stupid enough to carry excess weight in baggage when the limits are stated on their website then l don't see how you can complain, unless you think you are 'the special one' and not Jose Mourinho. wink.gif

Again, another 'why should the conditions apply to me because l'm the special one' type comment. Any adult who for other than medical reasons cannot go without food for a couple of hours has a problem imho.

Yes, now we know you are clueless with that last comment. Tiger have three flights daily in each direction between Bangkok and Singapore. If it takes you until after midnight to get into Singapore on a flight that arrives at either 11.55AM or 5.30pm then l have to wonder if you have ever flown Tiger before or even looked at their website. Returning to Bangkok there are departures at 12.10 in the afternoon and 6.10pm in the evening so why you need to be paying a surcharge for a cab fare is beyond me.

I fly either Tiger or Jet Star, both use late model aircraft and are reliable in my experience. I've found the staff on both airlines helpful and polite but then l'm not trying to get around conditions regarding food and luggage so maybe that helps. Air Asia are okay too but they have let me down once too often with their inability to depart on time.sad.gif

Because at time of booking, I managed to spot a 200baht one way ticket before taxes, I grabbed it without much thought. HELLO? $200baht, yo. I'm such a cheap-ass that I do a routine hourly check on all 3 budget airlines on a daily basis a coupla weeks before I fly to snag the best price possible and whaddya know, it always ends up to be Tibloodyger. I can't even begin to describe what the experience the last 2 times I flew with them was like. Right from the time I checked in til I had my butt seated (talking about departure from suvi here), I was given grief, oh the endless grief....

-There were no smiles all around at the check in counter and it's not like it was ridiculous o'clock or anything. My flight was at 8pm and I was there at 7, maybe they're pissed that I didn't arrive 2hrs before check-in time? Whatever. I was asked brusquely for my passport, well if you could consider, "Passport Please" uttered icily as asking then yea.

-When it came to lugguage weighing, I had to haul the dam.n thing onto the scale myself even when there were 3 male staff hanging around doing nothing. Ok, mai pen rai. I'm no frail waif so I won't begrudge them this. Turned out it was 2kg over weight, well you know what happened next. OF COURSE they didn't let me off. But I was smiling calmly and barely saying a word throughout coz seriously dudes, I was actually intimidated. It was like a 5 vs 1 kinda situation and you could cut the tension with a knife (though God knew what the heck anyone had to be tense about). Remembering that I had that never-ending trek that went onnnn and onnnn and onnnn to make before reaching the gate, I quickly dug for whatever baht I had and of course since Murphy's Law never fails me, I was short by like a 100b. Their supervisor (really nasty guy) said in a berating tone," Ok, we give you discount. Please run now or the plane will leave without you. They are boarding already."

-After running, at times slowing down to as brisk a walk as I could but all the time panting and gasping for breath, thought legs were going to give out and heart go into cardiac arrest any moment (I hate running and have never successfully completed the mandatory 2.4km even during PE in school so.) the gate was finally in sight. I'd made it just in time. And I was not yet dead.

-Air stewardess did not show me to my seat nor indicate in any direction but merely asked,"Seat number please?" I told her and she replied," Oh, 11B is over there" then resumed whatever the heck she was doing. Ok, right. I forgot that I'd paid for budget service, Onward then to figure out where over there is. Could feel the heat of other passengers' eyes boring into me. What? Like I'd have the guts to look them in the eyes. Uhm, no. Slided as inconspicuously as I could into my seat when I finally managed to find it (on a completely full plane no less) that is.

-Thinking that I had all woes behind me, heard a grating voice asking me if I would like to check in my hand lugguage. I said, no it's ok, I'll just tuck it under my seat. Like a gnat that refused to go away, she stood there and then said,"Oh but you have to check it in because it's too big" (Then why the fudge didn't you tell me in the first place? Why even bother asking me?) Ok, fine, who cares if I embarrass myself some more by begging yet more attention. Especially since everyone was only nicely buckled up and ready to take off. And mind you, no help was offered to store the carry-on in the overhead compartment either. :o

-Did you really think with my kind of ass-luck it ended there? Remember how I was in a rush and even making it to the gate in time proved to be no mean feat? Do you reckon then, I'd have the presence of mind to switch of the mobile? No, right? (Thanks for backing me up here) So naturally I took out the phone and noticed a miss call, curiosity edged reason out and come on, it takes all of 3 seconds to check a number. BUT lo and behold just as I was looking at the screen, that same voice, this time louder and snottier, trilled from above me,"You know you're not supposed to switch on your handphone on the plane? Can you switch it off now? By being this irresponsible, you're putting everyone's life here in danger, you stupid cow." Ok, so I only heard the last line in my head. The look she shot me clearly translated into that though, but then, you'd have to be there to fully appreciate the moment.

So yea, all in all not that bad a flight. No, really.

But knowing how forgiving (read : cheap) I am, I'll probably still use them if they're having one of their 200baht deals again. ;p

I have no connection with Tiger except as a paying customer. With all the mis-information you posted perhaps you're an employee/supplier of some full price airline. :D

Fennielyn, l think the problem is some expect the exact same level of service from a budget airline you get from a full fare carrier. For the price paid l think all of the big three budget carriers discussed here provide a decent service overall. Complaining about weight limits, food prices, seating etc. as some have is silly when all the conditions can easily be found when booking on the web. Even with full priced airlines you can have a low level of service. I've flown on American domestic and international flights with terrible treatment of passengers compared to anything l've experienced with Asian budget carriers.

Unless l've travelled business class l cannot remember the last time l was shown to my seat on any airline. Is it so hard to find your seat without assistance? The seats are numbered last time l looked ... even on Tiger :D

So why complain when you are at fault? Everyone knows this so why get annoyed when asked to do what most people do automatically, turn the thing off like you're supposed to :o
So yea, all in all not that bad a flight.

I dont think u see it in the same perspective as some of us here, fennilynn is not complaining that she is at fault when the staff retorted to her to off her mobile. Yes, she IS at fault when she forgot to off her mobile but, hey! there are serveral ways to remind a CUSTOMER, 1 way is to snap at thier face, another would be to smile and remind that she has to switch her mobile PLEASE (i do remmeber singapore having endless campaigns about courtesy since 1983, well i guess the staff must be born before that )

i think i remembered being ushered my seat right from the boarding step to my seat by this "stewardess" everytime on a COACH (not VIP class, just Class1) when i travel enroute to other parts of thailand. a bus provides that simple customer sevrice, why can't an airline? no matter how small it might be, the presence of a smile or the absense really makes a difference on how ur day continues.

as a customer yourself im sure u think that way too unless you're ok with being retorted at.

Oh well, i forgot, we're paying for what we get, so yeah, move on :o

Oddly enough, I had a completely opposite experience to fennielynn with the staff in Singapore. Very friendly, yes they charged me for my overweight luggage but then I expected that. Counter clerk was friendly enough. No one questioned my largish carryon bag. Nor the fact that I also had a largish separate laptop bag.

I certainly don't expect much in the way of service with a budget airline, and did not experience the rudeness some posters are complaining about. Maybe I got lucky.

What a bunch of whingers, it is a budget airline after all. An as for being charged for excess baggage you are told of the baggage weight limits when you book your tickets and if you choose to ignore them it is your own fault if you get charged.

I have now flown them 4 times and although not my favorite airline, they are a budget airline and you get what you pay for. Their service is perfectly acceptable and the budget terminal in singapore is perfectly adequate. If you don't like it don't fly the budget airlines, stick to first class where you get the service you want, just be aware the the ticket price also reflects the level of service.

I think what this thread shows is the different (unrealistic?) expectation levels we all have.

When l use a budget airline my priorities are safety and punctuality. For flights of less than 3 hours duration food and drink aren't a major concern for me. I would rather fly at a lower price and not eat, then use the money saved for shopping or a meal at my destination.

If l want really good service in Asia then l use MAS, Cathay or Singapore Airlines but most of the time the budget airlines get me to where l'm going with a minimum of fuss. I simply can't recall any budget airline member of staff being rude to me either on the ground or in the air but then l'm not trying to get away with extra baggage or anything else outside the conditions of travel. If you need to travel with a lot of baggage and expect staff to bow and scrape while they serve you cocktails and proffer a large selection of food then perhaps you need to rethink your choice of airline so you can find one that meets your expectations. Only thing is you usually pay extra for the increased service level but up to you of course.

Some of the attitudes in this thread remind me of reading the customer comments about budget hotels at some online hotel booking sites. Half the comments e.g. regarding a $50 a night hotel in Singapore will be along the lines of "not a great location, smallish room but okay for the price if you are only staying a couple of nights" while others will complain that "the room was so tiny, there was no room service and the breakfast buffet choices were limited so l will never stay in that hotel ever". Again it's people expecting 5 star accomodation and service at a 1 star price and the reality is you will not find that combination very often.

Previous posters have already mentioned a preference for Jetstar over Tiger. I don't see a point in making a comparison to five star airlines.

Business is business. There's nothing wrong with Tiger's obsession with safety, but being polite and courteous to customers in the process should also be a priority. Southwest Airlines is a good example of how a discount ticket airline can win over customers by paying attention to creating a positive customer experience. As I recall they also have an outstanding saftey track record.

As for people having difficulty in find a seat on an airplane . . . maybe you shouldn't go out alone! Oh I mean where could that seat be . .. . left or right . .. . mind you the numbers and letters above the seats must just be there to mislead . . :o
