Why Do Thais Look In The Opposite Direction When Walking?

Recommended Posts

I've seen it so many more times than back home in the Uk. Many Thais will be walking in one direction, but looking in another direction! The obvious end result is that they bump into other people.

I see it all the time in the street, supermarket etc.

So why don't they look where they are going? :o

This is certainly a new angle on Thai bashing, now they can't walk in an acceptable manner....It's <deleted> unbelievable.

Was thinking same thing. Honestly cannot believe how dull some peoples lives must be...

thai streets are usually much more crowded than streets in the UK and people are walking much slower, rather strolling, due to heat. They live a slower paced lifes than the westerners - less stresfull, less irritation. Maybe they don't achieve that much in their lifetimes as the others - but at least they are happy with themselves and with each others.

for many farangs it's what attracted them to thailand.

This phenomenon reminds of another strange thing I've noticed.

On several occasions, I've been walking back to my condo on the RHS of the road (against the traffic). Invariably, any songtaew that comes toward me (in the opposite direction) toots the horn & slows down as if expecting me to get aboard. I think to myself, "If I'm walking in one direction, why on earth would he think that I would want to go in the opposite direction?"

The answer came one day when I was on a songtaew, heading toward Pattaya. I saw a man walking on our side of the road & going in the opposite direction to us. The songtaew tooted, the man signalled it to stop, he got on & away we went. He was clearly walking the opposite direction for at least 500m before the songtaew tooted.

Can someone please help me understand this? :o:D

I Like the way they try to get into a lift before Ive got out or whilst waitingfor the lift stand so close that when the doors open their nose is vitrtually pressed onto the opening doors leaving no room for anyone getting out.

I've seen it so many more times than here in Thailand. Many Brits will be standing at a bus stop for five minutes complaining to why the <deleted> bus is late, but looking at each other talking aboot the darned weather.

The obvious result is that they get all pished-off at the driver and end-up talking (with fellow pished-off passengers) aboot retiring abroad.

I see it all the times in the pub, in the bookies, at the dole office.

So why don't the Brits think where they are going?

I just think that they are just getting on with their life, not thinking too much about what's going on around them cos there is so much going on, and its so hot and you just get so tired. I'm jealous actually, they have an amazing ability to just switch off. They have the ability to rest in a hectic train station for example - yeah shit example. but something like that :o

Bllody trains are the same, get on the On Nut one and I end up in Mo Chit. I reckon there must be some sort of conspiracy :D:o

:D:D:bah:

Look at me trying to be subtle, maybe if I looked where I was going I might get on the right train :D:bah:

I just cant be harsh like some and say what a wierdo post to the OP right out loud.

Then do what we do, don't get out of their way. Just stand there, even if the door closes on them. They get the message.

Probably for the same reason they drive their motobikes the wrong way up a dual carriageway.

We will never know.

indicate turning right on an over head U-turn :o , over taking on a one lane road & flashing at you to get out the way even though they're on your side of the road :D , pulling out of side road & never looking that a vhicle is coming :D , struggling to over take you then making the very next left turn off the main road :D , turning right off a main road but cutting the corner so almost causing a head on collision :D , & on & on & on & on :bah:

Anything else ?
