School's Out, And So Is The Internet

No big surprise, a number of schools are on break and as usual my internet service has become unreliable, and for several hours last night unusable.

A few years ago I studied Spanish in a Mayan village, San Pedro la Sula, on Lago de Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala. Somewhat difficult to get to and quite poor and backwards compared to Thailand, but a well connected wonderland compared to internet service in Chiang Mai. You'd think somebody at TOT would be embarrassed by the service they provide.

Anyone know when the school break ends?

TT&T has been more or less unusable for 2 days now...

Agreed.

'Maxnet'?

Hah.

More like "Maxed out" at the moment...

No hay problema con TT & T en Cuidad Saraphi.

Ipstar hasn't missed a beat. I was thinking of getting rid of it in favor of something cheaper through the new land line connection but will have to reconsider now.

I don't really understand internet connections though so any advice would be welcome.

I think anything's better than IPstar, even Maxnet at the moment.

See what either TOT or TTT can do for you based on your location (which I'm presuming is remote).

Today I signed up for that nifty special that TOT is offering: For 90 baht more per month, I can quadruple my download speeds! (256k to 1024K).

The change has been made, and I just tested my connection: 97K download speeds. :o The ol' pipeline is only so big.

How about users out there with a laptop, and a CAT/Hutch CDMA card? I have heard very good things about this connection, but don't know about the pricing. Any comments from anyone using this setup in Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai northern Thailand area? Include cost of card, where purchased info, etc. Thanks! :o

Is True cable an internet service, and, if so, can you provide details--cost, speed, availability, etc.?

I've let my Spanish get pretty rusty, no he practicado por unos anos, but it think you mean Ciudad Saraphi. Or maybe my Spanish got worse than I thought.

True cable is internet from "True" which doesn't come on the telephone line but on a cable much the same as cable TV. I am using it in the middle of the city and I think its available any place within the Superhighway. Maybe also on some of the larger moobahns (not sure). When TT&T maxnet and other ADSL systems are working well it is about similar in speeds, but it is definitely more consistent (much more).

Hey Sanpatong,

Are you getting that orange screen from TT&T when your service goes out I get it 5-6 times a night now, and I have to reboot computer and take out all the wires and reinsert into router. Major pain in the ass.

That seems like something I need to look into. Is there an English webpage or an office I can go to for more information? Can you give an approximate set-up and monthly cost?

Hi

I will be returning to Chiang Mai in two weeks. and living near Chang Phuek.

Have you had any responses regarding your above inquiry? What is it? I am very interested in any alternative, possibly dependable, internet service.

Must be a local thing?

Any help is appreciated.

True

They have an english version of this site but kind seem able to find it.

The office used to be (maybe still there) in a row of shophouses between corner of moat coming from Kad Suan Kaew and Chang Puak Gate (on outside of moat. The shophouses are perpendicular to the main road.

1024 connection costs around 1000Baht a month. My set up was free I don't know if that was a special offer.

Yes, it is just up from the large computer shop (computer world?). Keep going and you will see a red True sign on a small soi with a bunch of shop houses.

My experience with these people was bad. I stopped in to ask about signing up for service and was told they weren't selling service at the moment; I had to stop back in the following month. I went back the following month and was told again that they weren't selling service--some BS about how they hadn't settled on a final price or something. I didn't want to wait another month so signed up on TOT.

Service has been somewhat spotty. It's never been down for more than a couple days, and that was only once. Major drag. A few weeks ago my service started going down at random times, maybe for a couple hours, maybe just a few minutes.

Now, however, everything is working fine--and it is much faster. Used to download torrents at no more than 40k, and now I am sometimes getting up to 120k. I am on the 512k plan.

Sounds like True is in the general area of Icon Computer Plaza. I will look into it. After another frustrating night of trying to use TOT/TT&T service, I'm ready to try any alternative. I'm really frustrated with paying for fast internet and getting no internet, and I don't care about the schools out excuse.

My TT&T Maxnet Home has been a little sporadic for the last few days, but this morning it's fair zooming along. I still pay the 590 baht for the 256/128 connection, but am getting quadruple speed promotion, and I cant complain :o

lannarebirth, if you have a UPS running around, try plugging in your modem to it. Sometimes its just the power supply being "unstable". my modem reboots every time my A/C compressor runs. a UPS solved it.

a little pricey i am afraid mcspicy if you want good speed up to 2.4Mbps. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO. You need to buy one of those Sierra Aircards which would set you back about 11 - 12k. you could however settle for a cdma phone or a wireless data adapter thing around 3k-4k. they however can connect to only a maximum of 153.6kbps.

unlimited internet is THB590 per month which is not bad. its only been launched at certain provinces of which chiang mai is included. should be fast if you are willing to get the sierra aircard cause not many customers on it yet.

Thanks tigerbeer, but I've already got the phone lines running through a UPS.

Here's what I've been experiencing. In the morning and afternoon I get regular but slow internet service. In the evening and well past midnight I get increasingly frequent cutoffs as the might wears on. Around 8:00 I'll need to reboot everything , and it will stay on an hour. Around 9:, the same, but it will only stay on 40 minutes. By one in the morning I have to reboot every 10 minuts or so. Each cutoff is accompanied by a orang TT&T page saying something is in error. I'd have quit them long ago, but I've already had CS Loxinfo and Ipstar which were equally bad.

I also just signed up for the TOT 59o baht upgrade :o

I also got disconnected all the time , which was so annoying .

The thing is that the modem they gave me , was already not so so anymore .

Bought a new one , and voila no more problems .

I flew back home to the US. My 5mb cable connection rocks. I live in an older area so NO ONE uses the internet. So I get 13mbps download. I am loving the 800-1200kbps torrents! I download a 30min HD encoded T.V. Episode in 7 mins!
