Pc Fan Is Whirring On Off Making Noise, Can I Control This...

Featured Replies

Hi

recently I noticed, my PC, its an Acer.. the Fan inside is going On, Whirring loudly for about 30 or 40 seconds or more, going off for 20 or 30 secs and whirring again over and over. It is making alot of noise and is quite loud, and so annoying at times, I feel like kicking it with my size twelves to shut it up!!! Irritating!!!

Now, I do not have the PC box up against a wall or rammed into a hole so the air vents and fan is blocked.

I usually, (to get more distance on my headset wire, I use for PC voip calls) have the PC sitting out on its own, away from desk and over 18 inches, from the desk. where the fan part is and there is nothing blocking it.

Is there anything I can do to stop this irritating whirring, or to limit it?

I do have PC on for a good 14 - 16 hours a day using it for work. Noise is driving me nuts. :o

How can I stop this?

Thanks

Gerry

Sounds more like a busted ball bearing in the fan, you should just get it looked at and/or replaced.

If it is a grinding noise just replace fan. If it is a high speed whiring noise, spray fans and cooling fins on processor with canned air and see if that helps. If that doesn't work leave the side of the case off and see if that fixes the problem. If that doesn't fix the problem replace fan. If leaving the side off fixes the problem you are probably overloading the power supply causing excessive heat and you need to replace it with a higher wattage.

If it's dependent on how hard you push your computer, then it could be the CPU fan. The CPU fan on many computers will be set up to speed up and down according to the temperature of the CPU. At the highest speed, it can get verry annoying, especially if it's the stock (standard) heatsink/fan setup.

I'll side with the ones saying it's a busted fan. I've got two Acers and they run remarkably quiet. Maybe pull the cover off and let it run to help isolate it just in case it's a cooling fan on the video card or something.

Fans are cheap and dead simple to replace.

Headphones and soothing music (heavy rock) will solve all your fan problems :o
