l have a friend visting me from the UK next month, he intends to stay for 4-6 weeks then travel round Asia before going on to Australia.

He has purchased a single ticket from London to Bangkok, will he need to arrange a 60 tourist visa from London before travelling or will he gain entry on a normal 30 day visa ??

The reason l ask is people are telling me that immigration will not permit him entry on a single ticket unless he has a 60 day visa, lm told they want prove of onward travel arrangements lf arriving on a 30 day tourist visa. Please could anyone advise me if this is correct as lm not sure about my information.

Does this mean they are checking everybody arriving on 30 day tourist visa for onward flight arrangements ??

Sorry for sounding so ignorant on the subject, l have a work permit and have'nt used the tourist visa system for years.

Your thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated

The standard answer is yes, onward air travel is required. However, my last visa waiver enrty in Sept immigration did not check my tickets. It is highly recommended that an onward air ticket be available should immigration ask.

^^^ As above, but they DO check some people, get an immigration officer on a bad day and you're on the same plane going back!

BUT

Without a visa or onward travel he may not be allowed to board the aircraft in the first place so the immigration point is moot.

Airlines at LHR have always been a bit fussy about the travel/visa requirements, things can only have got tighter recently.

Get a visa, period!

Never once been asked for a ticket by Thai immigration. That's from hundreds of times going through.

Of course, if you're that one in a 1000 that gets picked out the downside is really bad as you're put on the plane back. The downside is not worth the risk. Spend the £28 or whatever it is to get the tourist visa.

Can you apply for a "visa on arrival" I've always wondered what those signs were for.

Visa on arrival is a 15 day permitted to stay that is paid for and only available to a short list of countries in which obtaining a Consulate visa might present a problem (mostly former Eastern Europe).
