Termite Hill Growing

Featured Replies

a termite hill suddenly appeared on the side of our garden and thought i could live with them, but a year later, they started growing and the ground is swelling with their huge hill and now they are encroaching on my garden. I've tried a couple of poisins recomended by local fertilizer shop and even doubled the dosage and they still are growing.

Can anyone recomend the best and most effective way to rid my grarden of them????

An easy way to get rid of the mound is to take an old axe and cut around the base where it joins the ground then push the mound over and away. We used to use termite mounds for dirt tennis court surfaces.

If the poison isn’t in the soft inner area the neighbours chickens may enjoy the fresh feed of termites.

It's more of a hill.....up from ground level about a half meter now and covering an area of 4or 5 sq mtrs, so can't push over and from what i've heard, the queen is safely down in the basement, sometimes more than a meter below surface.

That makes it a bit harder then. I still recommend chopping around the edge and trying somehow to break the mound up to expose the inner nest. It will be hard work chopping through the hard crust of the mound.

Once the mound is gone the inside is soft. As kids we enjoyed jumping into it and would sink down to our waist or more.

You could then spray your poison and see if it soaks in and kills the nest off.

If you have room, get in a local guy with a tractor, knock the mound over or dislodge it; when moved light a fire in the core. Have done as described, works very well. Safer thn poison!

You need a sharpened steel rod and a hammer. You must break open the mount, find the honey-combed bit and kill the queen.

There is no garuantee that a queen is present as this could just be a satellite nest. The queen could be a mile away.

Once the mound has been broken and the queen removed, add poison.

If you can't be bothered, any pest control company can do it for you.

I've gotten rid of wasps, bees and ants with fire and smoke so I'd go for that. Breaking the top off sounds a good idea then let rip with the matches.

I am about to battle 6 termite hills

break the mound open if you have big red ants nearby they love to eat the termites (fun to watch)

I am also going to try boric acid (google boric acid termites to find out more)

please let me know if or how you have any positive results

thanx :o

A ford tractor with a blade will make short work of it. Harvest your garden and spread the dirt from the mound over your garden. The mound itself will be like concrete but taking a bite at a time with the blade will cause it to break up in fine pieces. That dirt will be very fertile. I wasn't able to level a huge one we had because my wife had all sorts of things planted there before I was able to totally level it. By huge, I mean about 30 to 40 feet in diameter. It's still about 3 feet above the rest of the ground.
