Thai Birth Certificate

My friend's wife just a had a baby in an Isaan hospital. The hospital is insisting that his name must be in Thai on the document that will be taken to the Amphur to get the birth certificate. He is concerned that this might cause complications in having his name in English on the birth certificate. Anybody have any knowledge or experience in this area? Thanks!

Not that I am current on this, but my kids birth certificates issued localy in Thailand all had my name in Thai. This presented no problem when I registered the births with our embassy. The embassy used my passport to issue the kids certificates. These certificates were used to get passports for them later. No big deal.

You are in Thailand so you must expect things to be in Thai. In addition the baby will initially obtain a Thai birth certificate so it is natural everything will be in Thai.

Get a certified translation done of the birth certificate (3/400bt) and take it/post it to the embassy where a foreuign birth certificate will be issued.

Speaking only on Phuket, the hospital issued a Thai and an English language BC. Ask for both if possible. Otherwise just have it translated. In any event, they put your passport number on the BC anyway.

Just looked at my daughter's. My name in Thai but no passport number. I suppose because my passport number will change in the future.

No problem. I had a baby(well the wife did) recently in Isaarn and my name was in Thai. last month I went to the UK embassy and got the British cert(10,000 baht) -no problem. Get the Thai one translated for 2-300 baht across from the embassy. Passport another 6,000 baht.

Some hospitals do the birth cert. for you - Bamrungrad did our other daughter's BC for 1000 baht.

For your friend. from my personal experience there should be "no problem" having a falang name (in Thai) on the birth certificates. What you should insist on however, is having the spelling in Thai correspond accurately to your name. The main area of difficulty I had was that The Thai spelling would have had my translated name ending in the letter T instead of D. which would possibly have led to difficulties later, So "stick to your guns" and insist that the thai version reflects the actual letters in your name.
