jonny48 Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 hi all i bought one of those big concrete pots on a plinth ,filled it with lillys and water, bought some nice fish from the market in big c and they have all died, any ideas where i,me going wrong thanks
Goshawk Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 two possibilities... some chemical/substance within the concrete of the pot itself is polluting the water the fish were already diseased before you bought them
meandwi Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Lack of oxygen. Most all fish require an air system or some kind or a small waterfall to move the water and produce air, There are a few fish like betta fish and some types of gold fish that can live without these air producers. Also, if they are fresh water fish, you can not put materials from the ocean like coral or sea shells in with them. Cement pots also have a high ph from the lime especially if it is a new pot. I have seen coy fish live in large cement pots, but they were old pots and had a moss growing on the sides. Anyway, hope this helps.
pianoman Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) With any New Concrete container / pond you need to fill with water, let set for several days, empty clean and repeat several times to clear out all of the lye that the concrete contains... Also any tap / city water needs to set for at least 24 hours to allow any chlorine to dissipate out.. Put fish in prior to that and the high chlorine content will kill the fish... Having a few plants can / will provide enough oxigen content for most small fish, so additional airiation is usually not required... Pianoman Edited November 4, 2007 by pianoman
