Well, I'm American, and I would never fall for that lame excuse of a rip-off - the Queen on the balcony - give me a break :o

OK understood and quite right too. So if you don't want to see the Queen how's about buying London Bridge again, we've got another one for sale.

:D:D:D:D

They wouldn't fall for that one again.........Would they?

Right mates, and I think you may have fallen victim to the mob mentality of football logic: the purchaser of that brige was an individual entrepreneur, not a country. :D

Blah, blah, blah.

Our resident British Hooligan takin the piss again.

Pavlov's theory proven once again. :D

Defending English Hooliganism now are you?

No, just wondering why you're so obsessed with Bendix lately. It reminds me of when schoolboys entering puberty keep annoying the girls in hopes that they will get noticed. :o

Don't let me spoil the moment for you. As you were.

Too true, the purchaser was an American individual but will you please let your fellow countrymen know that we have an ample supply of London Bridges, enough for everyone else in the the US, whenever they are ready. :o

There is an easy way to avoid scams, find a good taxi and keep him.

Bit extreme that isn't it? So do you have any pets at home, yes, I've got a dog, two cats and a taxi!!

He does seem to have a tiny crush on me at the moment, doesnt he? I think it's charming. It's like being followed around by a puppy which keeps getting caught up in your feet.

But, back on topic.

DamianMarvis . . . terrible stories and all that but such stories can't be lumped together with alleged taxi scams per se. And I don't say that lightly because my own better half was robbed by a taxi driver once.

Single women get attacked and robbed in taxis the world over. Tragic and indefensible though that is, it's not really relevant to the notion of many members' insisting there is some sort of pervasive scam going on.

Just as an aside, since Mrs B got attacked, she always makes a point of calling me with the taxi number when she gets into any cab nowadays, and she has mace in her bag. That advice is not Bangkok-specific; I'd advise any solo woman traveller to do that in London, New York, Sydney or any other city in the world. It's just prudent.

But what do I know - I'm a hooligan.

Well, it's prudent to carry an umbrella when it looks like rain, but that doesn't mean the rainfall is the same everywhere.

It could have been worse, he could have called you a Chav. :o

Anyway, wouldn't worry, seems like a bit of a love hate relationship going on.

True, my tattooed chum. They are considerably cheaper here, i suppose.

The drivers are pretty much the same though. Some good. Some bad. It's a big big world.

I usually get the bus if possible in bkk,(peasant i here someone cry!)then i can just sit there & dream away,& not have to be concerned about strange directions or make polite conversation with the driver.

Nothing wrong with the bus, my fellow peasant :o . I actually quite enjoy a trip on the bus from time to time, it's a bit like going to Alton Towers, but about 25 quid cheaper and slightly more dangerous.

I just got back to LOS on Friday and they appear to have a new system at the new airport. The passengers are asked their destination by the taxi organizers and this is written on a chit which is passed by the passenger to the driver. The taxi drivers form a queue opposite the passenger queue so you meet in the middle and go together to the taxi. It is a very well orgainised and efficient method of handling the taxi drivers and the passengers as its on a first come firsrt served basis. The meter price was as always 180 Baht plus the 50 Baht charge, so no complaints there.

Cheers, Rick

Yes, it is a very big world, and once we get past the truisms of us all being human and therefore the same, it actually becomes a very interesting world as well.

How many pages are there of this crap? I read the first 2 pages & it was all <deleted>.

Look, it's very simple. To the OP;

1] do you know the going rate of taxi fares? It is usually available for you to see. Ask the driver.

2] did you know ABOUT how many kms you needed to travel?

Get real buddy! I'm a pauper here in Thailand & I wouldn't whinge about 100 Baht over such a distance/time period. To me, going from Don Muang to Suan Plu is worth about 300 to 400 Baht, depending upon traffic.

On many occasions, I've asked the driver to "quote" me the price. Of course, this only really works if you have a good idea of the cost of to where you are going.

If you have no idea about the cost to where you are going, how can you complain?

Seriously, Bendix, dude, I'm sorry but everyone is not the same regardless of race and culture... they just aren't, you know this man.... why you playing? If a taxi in my home city tried to do 1/100th the bad things I've seen happen here from Bangkok taxis he would be immediately charged and probably jailed. What exactly is your philosophy here? That all taxis around the world are capable of the scams and violence I've seen from taxis here? That is really what you believe? Your home town must be a pretty rough and stressful place to live if it is similar to here taxiwise. The worst you'll get in Canada, is a rude driver, even then he's risking his job.

Oh.. you know I'm not REALLY tatood right? Hope so! heh

I think you've posted that already in another thread, and so I will too:

When my g/f goes home she calls me when she gets into a taxi at the airport and gives me the number, and she says it loud enough so the taxi driver hears it. One time, the taxi driver asked if she was giving his number to her husband and she said "yes". He didn't appear to mind.

OK, ok, ok... fair comment Damian.

Let me amend my sweeping generalisation and say that what happens here could happen in just about any taxi in THIRD WORLD or developing country, which is what Thailand is. Let's face it; taxi drivers in places like South East Asia come from the poorer parts of a very poor local population. It's natural that there will be some bad eggs in the mix. But that is no different to places like Philippines, Indonesia, even Malaysia which I think has the worst taxi drivers I've ever seen.

You seem to be seperating between scams and violence. Scams are scams. Maybe 20% of drivers will try it on if they think you are a newbie. We can live with that, annoying as it may be. Violence is much worse but in a situation where single women get into a car with a single guy, that is always going to be a risk and any woman should take commonsense precautions like I've already mentioned. It's just being prudent. But violence against women in taxis is not limited to Bangkok - it happens the world over, and not just in the third world.

Crush?

No. My beef is with your hooliganism.

I submit that the influx of hooligans to Thailand is a large reason the Thais are resenting the Farang population these days.

Too many disrespctufull fools roaming around the Kingdom lately.

Some people think they are funny I guess.

Don't you agree the Hooligan crowd is doing great damage to the Farang reputation?

Bendix and Hooligan are two words I would not associate with each other. I know he can sometimes take snarkiness too far, but for the most part he's a good natured guy who enjoys taking the piss, and with minimal effort has worked you into a frenzy of comical proportion.

It's a web forum, not the UN. Adjust your perspective and you'll be fine. :o

Wow just had 2 non eventful taxi rides, one all the way to Nontaburi and one all the way back again. The driver took me the correct route and didn’t even try the "no meter" trick. Amazing! :D

AMAZING THAILAND isn't?

You and some of your friends are stupid enough to ignore that 98.47% of the rides are hassle free.

It's the few and rare bad apples (taxi drivers and TV posters alike) that spoil the fun for the 99.xx% others.

I usually am keen to help anyone with a question or problem but am getting seriousely pissed off with many of the stupid replies from that handfull of brain dammaged posters om this board :o:D:D

dude,

can the mods please put a ban on the increasingly common use of this annoying and silly word.
