Hi,

I would like to buy a puppy from Bangkok. Can you please guide me with details of getting a puppy from Thailand to India. What is the procedure? Do I need to quarantine the puppy? How and where in bangkok do I do that? Is there any paper work to be done? Do airlines let us carry puppies on-board?

Thanks,

Sachin

Hi Sachin,

First of all: why would you buy a puppy here while India is over-loaded with (stray) dogs. There are also several rescue organisations in India. If you are interested to know where, please PM me. I've got a friend who's been living in India for many years and has been involved in dog rescue.

In answer to your questions:

* Please, make sure the puppy is of proper age. I just got a poodle pup in yesterday. The family who bought her was told by the seller that it was 8 weeks of age, had received its first shots and that that was enough to export the pup. Once at the airport the family was confronted with the rules, and needed to leave the pup behind. You can imagine how much they were distressed. I saw immediately that this puppy is not older than 4 weeks of age (confirmed by the vet this afternoon), and if the vaccination has been perfomed as the accompanying vax book says, then this puppy has recieved her first combined vaccine at 2 weeks of age. I strongly believe the book is fake and the pup never received any vaccine and deworming.

* Vaccines and health certificate requirements: http://www.indembassybern.ch/import.html To my knowledge a pup can't receive its first rabies vaccination before its 3 months of age (it certainly isn't good for the health of the dog to give rabies at a yonger age). Before this it normally has received at least its first vaccinations of Canine Distemper, Parvo-virus, Infectious hepatitis and leptospirosis already. The vaccination book needs to contain the dates of vaccination, sticker of the vaccination bottle, stamp and signature of the vet.

* If you buy a puppy that is already 3 months of age or older from a pet shop, chances are high the pup lacks proper socialization, with a high chance on behavioral problems (such as fear and fear-aggression) later in the life of the pup. Something to be aware of.

* Once the pup has received all its necessary vax's, then you need to get a health certificate from the Livestock department in Bangkok 3 to 5 days prior to traveling. In the import pinned subject you can find the address.

* You need a good plastic international travel crate. Without the pup is not allowed on international flights. (if you search this forum you can get adresses in Bangkok where to buy those)

* In Thailand you do not need to quarantine the pup before travel. And from this Url http://www.indembassybern.ch/import.html I get the impression there isn't any quarantine requirement in India as well, as long as your paperwork is ok.

*As for which airplane companies take animals on board, you need to ask the company where you plan to book your flight. I know from Thai Airways and China Airlines that they do. It depends on the size of the pup, whether you can take it with you in the cabin or it goes in the cargo section of the plane.

I hope this info helps you on the way :o
