Does anyone have any idea to how much a divorce court proceeding would cost?

My wife is Thai and we married in UK, both been living in Thailand for 4 years, as far as I can tell from the older topics we can not get divorced at the Amphur and need to go with a lawyer each to the Family or District Court. Can anyone advise to what costs and time are involved? Its a straight no hassle split, no kids property etc, both consenting to divorce. I also read on the forum someone did this in two days, but others 3 months.

I had a friend call a Thai lawyer but they could only say we need to go to the UK embassy to get the divorce papers, however I'm pretty sure the embassy will just say I need a Thai lawyer and go to the cost.

With the little info I have I'm pretty lost where to start. Any advice regards cost and any (cheap) lawyer contact info would be much appreciated.

I let you know in a few days but I'm thinking around 30-35K to the lawyer (baht) plus whatever your own expenses will be. That is if you just can't go to the Amphur and do it the easy way ( which you indicated you can't).

Hi Neil, from what I've recently learned it is possible to get divorced at the local Amphur. A lady at the British Embassy BKK told me I need to get the marriage certificate translated into Thai then just go to the local Amphur and get divorced. The wife called the Amphur and they agreed this would be ok.

I'll let you know how we get on in the next few days.

Make sure your wife's ID card is in her married name. I went to Suang Luang district office in Bangkok to get divorced on Monday but my (now ex) wife had never changed her ID card into her married name so they wouldn't divorce us. We had to go to her home town in Korat yesterday so she could first change her ID card, then we did the relevent paperwork and they gave us our divorce certificates, then she had to change her ID card back again. Didn't cost anything, but a lot of messing about.

In Suang Luang they were also unsure as to whether they could divorce us because since we got married I had renewed my UK passport so my passport number was different to the one on the marrage registration in their office. It didn't matter in Korat, but if anybody else is in the same position take your old passport as well to be on the safe side.

This comes up with bank accounts also. But if only one passport change has been made there is written proof on the transfer page where immigration writes in the previous passport information. (If you were in Thailand when change was made)

You need to do your post on or look for a recent post about it on the Marriage and divorce forum.
