Phuket gears up for health hub meeting

PHUKET: -- The southern island of Phuket is gearing up to host the Ministry of Public Health’s annual academic meeting, which the local authorities hope will cement the province’s place as a regional healthcare centre.

Dr. Thinakorn Phongwiwat, deputy medical director of Wachira Phuket Hospital, said that the ‘Healthy Thailand’ conference to be held in the hospital on 24-27 August would select outstanding medical professionals to encourage innovation in Thai medical research.

Attributing the selection of Phuket as the host of the meeting to its potential as a regional healthcare hub, he said that the meeting would be addressed by Public Health Ministry Sudarat Keyuraphan on 25 August on the theme of ‘Healthy Thailand: the heart of development’.

As one of Thailand’s most important tourist centres, Phuket hopes to attract increasing numbers of health tourists with its hospitals and spas.
