Does anyone know about this new D-Link product?

http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=524

I want to have one shipped by my brother in the US since I cannot find one in Thailand. Cat Telecom is not helpful to find out if they will support this hardware. I don't think they want them in Thailand because it allows people to set a WiFi hot spot with one air card, and they want each user to have a contract and buy the card from them. I also want to know if there is an import restriction since the Thai D-Link website does not list this product.

I am really tired of the contant battle over who gets to use the air card!!

Given that you just plug in your Sierra Aircard (by CAT) into this thing and it creates a WiFi network, I am pretty sure it will work.

CAT doesn't know you are running it on that box.

Alternatively if you use a Mac you can create a WiFi network with 1 click. It will take your EV-DO connection and share it via the WiFi card. I have used this before to share a GPRS connection, worked fine.

I don't know if/how that works on Windows but it should be possible, either via Windows internet sharing or via 3rd party apps.

Side-note, I don't think CAT is opposed to that - they sell a terminal that does all this themselves. The only problem with the terminal is that it runs at CDMA 1x speeds - 10 times slower than EV-DO. But... it's the thought that counts... :o

I use the DIR-450 and is very happy with it.

I bought it in Thailand, paid ~7,000 Baht incl. VAT.

Email Khun Kasem, his company sells it:

Hi :o

I saw this (or a very similar) device in Panthip, also brand D-Link. Does it matter what type of AirCard is in there, i.e. GSM/GPRS or CDMA/EV-DO? Me thinks not - the device has a PCMCIA slot for such AirCard and shares that connection via WiFi or LAN ports. The speed depends on the AirCard (GPRS, EDGE, 2000-1x or EV-DO).

Hutch sells a similar device too, bundled with an AirCard - you can get 2000-1x or EV-DO, the EV-DO being a lot more expensive. The difference being only the AirCard that comes with the device.

If your Laptop has WiFi you can also share your internet connection, using Internet Connection Sharing in Windows (ICS). My boss does it with his AirCard (GPRS) and it works just fine. But the range is small, from one room to another and that's it (weak WiFi on his Toshiba).

Best regards.....
