I can tell you that your interpretation of the word 'farang' is completely and utterly incorrect. Farang in and off itself is a neutral word. It can indeed be used negatively by those who are not happy with farangs, but so can any word. The vast, vast majority of Thais that I know and interact with do not attach the stigma you feel it has to the word.

I also agree with that quote EXCEPT for the "It can indeed be used negatively ... so can any word." That is absurd! Farang is a racial word and clearly is a more loaded word than just any word, like truck or apple. Get it now?

Let me conclude:

The Thai word farang (many theories as to its origin) is used both as an adjective and a noun to talk about European descent (commonly called white) people and/or their cultures/countries. It is a NEUTRAL word used by Thais and any other race/nationality in Thailand or talking about Thailand. However, as it is a word that is related to the loaded subject of RACE, it can also be used by tone or context to be either a POSITIVE or NEGATIVE word. It is not like just any word that way, because of the race implications, race being a loaded subject everywhere in the world.

For examples:

Neutral: Many farangs live in Chiang Mai

Positive: We need to utilize more farang technology to improve the economy.

Negative: Look Farang! Charge that sucker double.

Unfortunately the "neutral" act of classifying ALL westerners with one name is symtomatic of a nation that is inclined to tar everyone with the same brush on grounds of appearance....in the long term this is not healthy.

try putting ther "N" word in your examples and see what it looks like.

You raise an excellent example. Farang food. I use that all the time. There is Thai food, Chinese food, and farang food. Everyone except the most obtuse moron knows what is meant by farang food. Even a food server here with a P.1 education knows what you mean if you ask if a restaurant has 'farang' food, e.g. a farang breakfast, etc. Just one example of a non-offensive and useful way in which the word 'farang' can be used here. OK, some more examples. Farang kitchen or bathrooms to distinguish from Thai style. Same for toilets. A farang toilet is a sit down crapper, Thai is the other. If you are in a large room full of people, any Thai or farang with a brain will be able to identify the asian, african, and farang people in the room if need be. I could go on, but the word is simply far too useful to abandon because of the moanings of some thin-skinned PC farangs.

The word seems to be based on an ignorance of the world outside Thailand. Not that this is their fault. Thai people have told me that in schools they get little or no education about the Western world, that a month’s trip round Europe is just not financially viable for most people and that Thai TV is not exactly littered with educational documentaries on the world outside.

In my old part of Faranglandia, it quite common and not racist to announce, I feel like eating Asian food tonight. (Gimme that rice!) Now sometimes a person may start out more specific, I feel like Chinese, but if starting with I feel like Asian, that is a starting point for a discussion, how about Thai?, how about Korean?, how about Vietnamese? So no, not racist or confusing to say Asian food or Western food or farang food, just a general starting point before becoming more specific. Sometimes in Thailand with Thais, it never does get more specific, a farang style breakfast is a farang style breakfast. But yes we know what is meant, it won't be rice porridge.

The sort of ingredients I am purchasing at the afore mentioned supermarket are: safron, cumin seeds, cous-cous, chick peas, filo pastry, etc. I then take it all home and cook “farang food”. So it seems to me pretty clear that “farang food” means tajines, mezza, fetoush, baklava and the like. Is this not obvious to you all?

Well, people from certain parts of the sub-continent are considered as being caucasoid, but this is certainly not the majority as your statement would suggest.

I would certainly not expect many people to know this unless from India, having a stong interest in India or Anthropology.

Well, people from certain parts of the sub-continent are considered as being caucasoid, but this is certainly not the majority as your statement would suggest.

Some common examples of farang food: Hamburgers, Irish stew, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, haggis, cheese fondue, sandwiches, spaghetti, ravioli, bratwurst, a good steak, baby back ribs...I am getting hungry.

I feel I have to defend my girlfriend here. The sector of society that my girlfriend is from is the professional sector that was educated to Masters Degree level (she got hers from a "farang" university).

The point I was trying to make, with humour, was that the word "farang" can sometimes be used to mean foreign and, as I said in my original post, is so vague it's almost meaningless.

Farang (in Thai: ฝรั่ง), sometimes pronounced falang, is the generic Thai word for a foreigner of European ancestry. While generally farang is a neutral word, it can be used in a mocking manner, or even as an insult depending on context. For instance, the expression "farang ta nam khao" (listen (help·info)) (in Thai: ฝรั่งตาน้ำข้าว - which literally means farang with rice-milk-colored iris) would be considered an insult. It is common in Thai to just say "farang" to point out the presence of one, without making a whole sentence. Black Americans have been occasionally referred to as farang dum (black farang) in Thai: ฝรั่งดำ especially American servicemen during the Vietnam War.

The word 'kaffir' is a neutral word meaning native. Go try using it in Africa.

a sri langkan khon ghek (muslim person!)...they don't see it as offensive, it's just a simple way to group people rather than use long unnecessary language.

Actually, if khaek does mean Moslem, I think most Sri Lankans would find the description offensive.

And isn't the term khaek for 'Indian' somewhat offensive? My wife has reprimanded me for using the word with that meaning in Thai. I've always suspected that it has the implication that khon khaek will not be allowed to remain in Thailand for ever.

Altho I would prefer to use the word foreigner. I also find myself using the word farang, it dossent say much for our self respect.

I doubt very much if the Chinese in the UK refer to themselves as Chinks, or the Portuguese as porko's

It's such a shame theres not a word for the Thai race that we could come straight back with when they call us farang instead of having to politely call them Thais.
