Advice Appreciated Concerning A Dogs Broken Leg

Featured Replies

I'll try to make this brief. My dog (one year old and a healthy thai dog) was run over 4 weeks ago suffering a badly broken hind leg. There was noone on Samui who could undertake the operation so I drove him to Phuket expecting them to splint and screw the leg. They put four metal pins thru the two halfs of bone, exiting thru the skin and going into an external bar. He also twisted some wire into a loop to hold the bone which had split lengthways. The final result looked like a kid let loose with a mechano set.

Have finally gotten the infection under control and he is now suffering from pnumonia. Got him eating, first time for three days, by buying him the puppy food he eat from 1-3 months old.

Was inspecting the leg to see why he isn't putting any pressure on it yet and realised the external bar is broken. I have no idea how long this has been broken as he has been bandaged most of the time.

Can this be fixed? Does it require an operation? Is it too late? Does anyone know a vet who can help? I will not be taking him back to the vet in Phuket. The Samui vet apologised for recommending him. I have no problem with taking him to Bangkok if I can find someone competant

Kasetsart, Mahidol or Chula Universities, I'm thinking of. Especially as he has the other complications as well.

And ... PM Bambina!

Dr Somsuk couldn't do it? I am surprised, I thought he was a veterinary surgeon.

That is the vet he has been to since a puppy, and treated him directly after the accident, but I cannot recall seeing a male vet. It was a female vet who took the x-rays and recommended phuket. Have been taking him to the vet further south on the ring road since, and back to the other one for x-rays. It looked, although the x-ray wasn't very clear, that there are still two pieces of bone loose in the leg which should have been removed during the operation. Was planning to take him back this week for another x-ray to see if the bone is knitting and have another look to see if those shaded areas are bone

Somsuk is definitely a man. I wonder what happened to him?

My understanding from a foreign vet friend is that he is quite a skilled veterinary surgeon--perhaps you should ask where he is and why he can't do the op?
