Despite what their published standards are for carry-on luggage - Maximum Dimensions of Carry-on Luggage: 22in x 15in x 8in/55cm x 38cm x 20cm (length x width x height) they seem to be enforcing a rule of 18 x 14 x 8 inches - I had to argue to get my bag permitted.

They are also enforcing the 7 kilo rule - so be warned if you're a packrat like me and try to travel without checked luggage.

7kg of hand luggage and 20kg hold baggage is NOT AirAsia style. Just because you get away with it most of the time, you should not assume it's your right to exceed the allowance. The aforementioned luggage allowance IS for long haul trips and £500 fares in Y class. If you're wanting to take the kitchen sink with you then pay for J, F or, pay the excess.

Well just check if you have carryon size whelley & bathroom scale & check for yourself :o any small carryon weights 4-5 kg .. So imagine what can you take with you on board, unless you travel in style >> with plastic shopping bag :D ..

Btw.. kudos to skyteam Korean Air KLM & AFrance for putting the carryon limit @ 12 kg>> which IS more in touch with reality ,, althou mostly its 10 !kg every airline lets you with ... But NOT 7 >> do the math :D

7 for carry on and 20Kg for in hold seems to be the normal for all international flights on routes that do not go to the US. The US government stipulates airlines that fly to the US adopt different rules, for some unknown reason. These rules are known as the peice rule.

But as I said 7kg carry on and 20Kg in the hold is pretty much the norm. The problem is how many airlines enforce the carry on rules, although I do note in the first post they enforeced a rule for a bag smaller than their published limits which seems wrong.

I use Emirates all the time now and fly with hand luggage only.

I use Birmingham or Manchester airports to avoid Heathrow, they are also checking the weight of your hand luggage at both airports.

Although the weight of my hand luggage has been under 7kilos every time, it brings a wry smile to my face when the punters behind or in-front of me can hardly see over their trolleys. Surely they should happy with travelers like us rather than punishing us because of a few extra kilos.

I know rules are rules but the total weight saving for them is substantial. I could take up to 32 kilos as i'm a silver card holder.

Absolute rubbish! 7kg is virtually industry standard. You should also note that in their rules, AF state that the local airport authorities may impose stricter rules than they do.

You don't say where you were flying from but this is from Emirates web site

Exceptions

For Emirates flights departing from the UK or flying to the US, a one piece rule applies for all classes. Passengers are permitted to carry one bag no greater than 22 x 17.7 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm).

Actually larger than you thought.

Bangkok to HK. I actually copied the baggage stuff from Seatguru, my mistake. Nevertheless, they are starting to get picky in Bangkok.

7 Kilos is common, but is not necessarily an industry standard - it's commonly accepted by certain carriers, and/or certain countries however.

Nevertheless, neither Thai, Northwest, KLM, Gulf Air, or Singapore Airlines - or even Etihad - have ever made any mention of the 7 Kg rule (though I haven't checked their websites yet). Australia supposedly enforces 7 Kg as standard, or at least it did the two times I traveled on a return leg from Oz.

HK is rigidly enforcing the size requirement - they will check you at the entrance to immigration. They are not checking weight, however.

Your mileage (no pun intended) may vary. However, packrats should be aware that certain airlines will enforce size and/or weight requirements, so if you're a business traveler like me, these airlines like Emirates might be best avoided unless you don't mind checking luggage.

KLM is the same as Air France as they are part of the same company & Northwest just gives dimensions.

From Thai Airways web site:

Each passenger may carry, without additional charges, one piece of hand baggage suitable for placing under the seat in front or in the closed overhead rack, provided that the carry-on baggage has a maximum length of 56 cms (22 inches), width 45cms (18 inches) and 25 cms (10 inches). However, the sum of the three dimensions shall not exceed 115 cms (45 inches) and the weight must not exceed 7 kgs.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING YOUR HAND BAGGAGE - click here

Under BAA regulations and with effect from 01 August 2006, cabin baggage that exceeds the IATA standard size, as documented above, will not be allowed to pass through any Central Search area at Heathrow Airport.. Passengers will be directed back to the Thai Airways check-in and the bag and or additional contents will be redirected as checked-in luggage.

From Gulf Air's web site:

CABIN BAGGAGE

    One bag (maximum dimensions 55 x 40 x 30 cms or 22 x 16 x 12 inches),
    Or

    Total weight: 9 kgs

  • Economy Class:
    One bag (maximum dimensions 45 x 40 x 30 cms or 17 x 15 x 12 inches)

If you are travelling from the UK, you are allowed one piece of hand luggage only. The bag must not exceed the following dimensions: 45 x 35 x 16 cms. A musical instrument may be carried separately if it does not fit into the cabin bag. Laptops can be carried as part of the hand baggage.

From Singapore Airlines web site:

  • Briefcase - 50 cm by 40 cm by 25 cm (20"x 16" x 10")

From Etihad's web site:

Nice one Clayton.

But even when KLM was not yet merged with AF, they never had any problem with weight or size. And Heathrow, one of my least favorite airports, only gave me hassles about having an outbound ticket from Thailand, never had any problem with luggage, even a piece which is well-known to be about two inches oversize when summed.

Then again, I was Platinum, so perhaps they kind of "overlooked" this fact.

Asiaworld also made the point I always make - the bag alone, when completely empty, always weighs 4-5Kg and mine is lightweight. However, computers should always be kept separately, and one other way to get extra carry-on is to use a garment bag (though I once managed to get a garment bag stuffed to the hilt onboard, to the laughter of the flight crew).

Anyhow, as I was saying, 7 Kgs is commonly-accepted but not necessarily standard. You can probably make a case both ways for this. They really ought to make it at least 10-12 Kgs, though, considering that every overhead bin I've ever seen is always rated at 50 Kgs but can realistically only hold 2 full-dimension bags plus a few knick-knacks.

Getting OT a little, but someone above mention BAA's one bag rule. I understand that the government has now lifted this restriction and requested BAA to change the rule as soon as it is capable. This is going to happen sometime in Jan 2008.

8 January 2008 to be precise so; time for another security alert! Seeing as you've already admitted to going OT, I'll add that it's just been announced that Osama Bin Laden is to address the people of Europe in a new message - somehow, I doubt it will be a message of goodwill for Christmas. :o
