I have had a slight pain in one of my bottom-middle teeth for over a year now. It's not a constant pain, I get it when I'm eating but only sometimes. Sometimes I'll eat hard food and be chewing on my left side with no problem at all, other times I'll be eating something very soft such as rice and I'll suddenly get a quick sharp pain in one tooth. It's not agony at all but I can feel it for sure. Like I said this doesn't happen all the time.

Anyway, I left it and left it and finally went to the dentist this morning. I explained my problem he had a look and couldn't see anything wrong he was even poking that area with his sharp tool thing and it didn't hurt at all. He said that I had a slight cavity on two of my teeth in that area but that was nothing and shouldn't really cause any pain.

I'm relieved now because I had fears of major root canal work or something like that, but even now he says Im fine im left wondering what the pain is and should I get a second opinion?

Yep, definitely get a second opinion. Did he do an X-ray?

My dentist fixed the wrong tooth (although it did have some cavity). Ended up having to have the tooth next to it extracted.

Always get second opinion when in doubt.

Back when I still several teeth in Thailand, I had extreme pain in one of them, and the novice dentist couldn't find the problem, and didn't do an xray. The next day I went to his boss, who finally took an xray and saw a huge abcess, which required treatment. So, I agree with Macx: get a second opinion WITH an xray.

could be one of many things , possibly a leaky or cracked filling , or an old cyst under the tooth but the dentist should have spotted that.

but sounds to me like a cracked cusp or tooth.

x-rays wont always reveal a crack.

very hard to diagnose accurately without removing any filling in the tooth and having a good look with magnifying optics.

shining an uv light on the tooth or the inside of the tooth can show up any cracks in the tooth.

eventually the cracked tooth will fracture and a crown with or without root canal work will be necessary.

depending on the position and depth of the crack , a crown or onlay to cover the tooth should sort it out before it fractures.

a competent dentist at one of the hospital clinics or the bangkok dental hospital (sukhumvit 49 , 022605000/15) should be able to pinpoint the problem and give a correct diagnosis for you.

Yeah probably serves me right for going to see a dentist that does free check ups, he didnt seem to take too long about checking me! Anyway Im booked in at another place for Friday and Ive asked to have some x-rays done (120 baht a pic) so lets see how that goes....
