The Issue Of 'from Birth Or By Choice'

Featured Replies

Human sexuality is something that KEEPS CHANGING, with its various aspects.

I, myself, am not crazy about labellings but if I really must descibe myself sexually with a label, I would say I am 'near the totally gay side of bisexuality'. I wasn't always feeling like this.....in fact I used to be on quite the opposite side of the scale.

The fact is people (and things) CHANGE in life. People's sexuality also changes, as they age and as they go through various experiences in life (by that, I don't mean just the sexual experiences).

I have read about news regarding results of research on 'whether homosexuality comes from the genes or not'. Corect me if I am wrong but the results are usually inconclusive. I still believe that there is a high chance that for some people, homosexuality might be 'coming via the genes'.

But I feel that mostly, it is a matter of choice and I feel that there is nothing wrong with this.....the important thing is that one can feel comfortable with how he/she feels.

A lot of anti-gays (and there are unfortunately a handful of them here in this forum) feel that homosexuality is 'sort of acceptable' if they feel it is coming from birth and that for them homosexuality by choice is 'evil'. Well, I say to those people 'Wake up, fools......choices shapen up our lives...as long as we don't harm anyone, you have no frickin' right to impose your narrow-minded value set on us'.

Agree entirely Jemjem... one of the best articles I ever saw on this subject was in Scientific American some years ago. The writer pointed out that many aspects of phenotype ("body" type) come from the interaction of genes with environment in quite complex and unpredictable ways. For example, the same seeds from the same plant would tend to grow significantly differently (height, leaf size, number of leaves) depending on altitude, soil moisture, and mineral availability- and some of these changes would be PERMANENT, even if the plant were uprooted and repotted somewhere else with different conditions. Some of those changes would NOT be permanent.

This gives the perfect uneven mix of genetic and environmental influences on sexual behavior, with a dash of individual unpredictability and life changes thrown in. It's in no one's interest for sexual tastes to come solely from genes OR environment, because the moment that is "proven," incredible amounts of bigoted cash will flow into "preventing" supposed "undesirable" sexualities. At the same time, while I'm happy if people experiment with different ways of living, it's in most of our interests for at least some of us to be relatively "fixed" in our desires, because otherwise the "homosexual cure" quacks have a field day. I hope it keeps 'em all guessing for many more centuries to come, until we've advanced a little more past the "howling at the moon" stage our species is still in religiously and politically.
