best for future travel into and out of usa and other countries...understand that buddha has least requirements to do....but what is required for all and which way easiest for future...been with the girl for two years and total trust...best you can have with any girl i guess....but with all the hassles with embasseies and what not what are the major pros and cons between marriage in thailand or do the route in usa?

thanks...part of the question has to do with an approach to getting visa to usa for visits in future.

Thanks!

Marry her in Thailand and it will be easier for visa purposes - you'll already have the documentation.

Marry her in Thailand (both Amphur and none-monks blessing) and she will probably start to believe she is married.

1. It does not matter where you were married for future travel. Passports (citizenship) determine requirements.

2. Religion is not involved in official marriage in Thailand.

3. There is no hassle with Embassy to get married in Thailand - you fill out a form and have it notarized.

4. From post assume you do not work or plan to live in USA. Wife should not have a problem getting a tourist visa for trips if this is provable.

I'm gonna jump in on this one. I'm planning on marrying my Thai GF when I return in December, but don't have a clue what's involved. Isn't there a rule that you must have a certain amount of money in the bank? £6K (UK) I think. What about dowry? Is that still expected and how much are you likely to be asked for?

Once married, is it easier to bring your wife back to U.K.? Will she be able to work here? (Her choice not mine.) Or are we going to be spending all our time in various embassies as we go between the 2 countries?

I could go on with a lot more questions, but I'll keep it brief.

Sunburn you need to swear an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry at the British Embassy,

then get it translated and certified by the MFA.

Then you marry the lady at the Amphur office, that is the legal bit.

She may also want the Monk ceremony to allow people to see that she is married,

and you may need to pay a dowery.

This is subject to agreement with her parents, and may again just be for show.

I paid 100,000 baht but I got it back after the ceremony, depite the fact that her brother, who was giving her away, made a big show of putting the swag over his shoulder as the left the room.

I beleive that the Embassy is much easier about issuing visas to married ladies, but they are still on the look out for marriages of convenience to obtain entry to the UK. After 2 years you wife will be able to apply for citizenship.

Much easier than it is for those who live here!!

It is also easier for you to get a visa to stay here. All you really need is to meet the financial requirements fo 400,000baht in the bank or 40,000 baht income per month.

So to get a legal marriage in Thailand, one only has to go to the Embassy and say you are not married and they will give some document that says you are not married.

Is there any checks or waiting around? Or is it a one stop operation after you pay the fee?

an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry at the British Embassy. Thanks Astral that was the bit i am enquiring about.

How is the procedure at Uk embassy?

Can not list the items at the UK Embassy but for US Embassy you also have to give your employment/references/parents etc. After this is typed up and signed/notarized/payment made you then have to have it translated into Thai at an approved service. Then it must be taken to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for registration/stamps. The copy you get back is then presented to the Amphur Office as proof you are a good person and fit to marry. You will then both be asked questions about your relationship and if all is in order be given marriage certificates. Marriage is then official.

There have been several topics on divorce and all that can go wrong after you marry. Well worth a search and read before you decide to marry in order to make it easier to obtain visas.
