WOW now thats extremely informative, I am going home soon and ill be getting my international license

for sure, because i have been told by several persons that they like to fail you the first time, and its an all day wait, some one said that they just dont like to issue too many licenses on the island.

Like to know who else failed the first time???

Had to laugh at this from freebeerforyorky.com

Be considerate. Be careful of and considerate towards other road users. You should:

  • try to be understanding if other drivers cause problems; they may be inexperienced or not know the area well
  • be patient; remember that anyone can make a mistake
  • not allow yourself to become agitated or involved if someone is behaving badly on the road. This will only make the situation worse. Pull over, calm down and, when you feel relaxed, continue your journey
  • slow down and hold back if a vehicle pulls out into your path at a junction. Allow it to get clear. Do not over-react by driving too close behind it.

They are trying to tell you, or convince you not to loose your cool, but they know dam well your gunna loose it your first time driving in Thailand.

And is this for real, this pic is from Samui, guy said no photoshop involved, maybe its been taken down.

Remember it well the sign actually said BRICK but someone changed the B to a P. It was on the Chaweng - Lamai road where overhanging rocks were falling in the road.

As we all know Samui does not have any driving rules.

As the op has probably found out, if she takes her international driving licence, certificate of address from Immigration and medical certificate (easy to obtain if you are breathing) she probably will not have to take any tests.

I agree with you. The first time I drove in Thailand was 15 years ago and I was actually w*rking at the time therefore with a tendency to be in a hurry. However, for the last 8 years I've been retired and now don't need to rush anywhere. The advice, IMO, is still good.

Try a local driving school, they should have an english version, or know where to get one.

I didn't have to sit the test for my car, but decided whilst I was there I wanted a bike license as well, for which I had to do a test.

They gave me a copy of the highway code, which I flicked through for about 5 mins, and then passed the written test. I am pretty sure I would have passed without looking at their highway code, it's really not very taxing (remember the Thais have to sit the same test).

huwhwuhwu, both i will say.

but it's hard to live here without driving a car.

this is the worst place for transpotation.

so, i don't have a choice.my thai coach doesn't speak much english. when he teaches me,most of the time just telling me: cha cha... slowly slowly...

.......my speed: 0-40km ahhaha

if u see someone driveing in front of u, hardly not moving, don't push too hard, just passing...that is new driver.,...heuheuehheuhe

thanks for all the advices.

i will drive very carefully when i am not drunk.
