Does anyone out there belong to or visit the British Club?

I am considering joining and would appreciate an honest view, is it clicky?

Thanks

When I joined the BC 27 years ago I would definately say it was, you needed to be recommended by a member as being an upstanding British or Commonwealth citizen and your entrance form signed by committee members. As a family with mixed Asian/English children we were a bit of an oddity. These days, in the face of competition from health clubs, condo fitness centres, membership is more open, you pays your money and thats it. Each sporting section has its own little following but usually easily to break into.

I go occasionally as my club has reciprocal agreement with the British Club. I find the lack of energy at this particular club draining during the week as there is a lot of seniors. You can always find someone to play tennis with though but the gym is just ok and the pool is nice but on weekends is crowded with kiddies.

Nice dinner/theatre shows put on by the BTC a couple of times a year and I find the food and drink reasonable. If you do join don't pay what they are asking as I know they will reduce the joining fee by more than 70pct!

What and where is the British Club.

I have just moved to BKK and might be interested, at least a look round would do no harm.

Thanks

Yes. The members are so old, their denture plates click when they talk. A poster claimed to be able to get a 70% discount off of the entry fee. I'm not sure how he proposed to do that - the bigger question is why would anyone join? I went for the tour of the grounds, which began at the main building. "There are meeting rooms upstairs. We have meetings there." The membership director certianly had a grasp of the obvious. We entered the bar, which could hold a dozen people comfortably. A trivia game with the 8 attending lounge lizards was in process, and three of them shouted in unison "JOHN PROFUMO". It was as exciting to watch as it is to read this. A couple guys were in a conversation, "Pip pip, Commodore, would you join me for a gin and tonic?" "Pip pip, Old Spice, I fashion a spot of tea. A spot of tea would hit the spot. Spot on. Heh heh. Pip pip." So much for the intelligent use of the English language. We visited the dining room, with 4 guests as 3 different tables. Fifteen people would feel crowded there. We visited the (expensive, and at an additional cost) fitness center. Except for the handful of employees, no one was there, probably because of the incredibly offensive odor there. The swimming pool area had most of the activity. The pool was filled with screamimng kids, as their lumpy, frumpy guardians enjoyed their refreshments. You're probably thinking of that 24-year old hottie from Knightsbridge. She wasn't there, but her parents and grandparents were. If you enjoy affected British mannerisms and contorted speech patterns, I suggest watching "The History Boys" and "Started for 10". Not a single mention of Christine Keeler's boyfriend. Pip pip. Oh yes, the word is "clique".

I can think of few things worse than hanging around with geriatrics who think they run the city.

The whole place is 'a bit average' if you want to meet genuine movers and shakers....well you aren't going to do that mixing with expats too much.

European Young Professionals is at least a fun booze up, but Brit club....dear oh dear.
