August 30, 200421 yr Two men arrested with heroin stash BANGKOK: -- Two Taiwanese men were arrested after police found 14 kilograms of heroin worth Bt6 million stashed in an apartment building on Ratchadaphisek Road, a senior police officer said yesterday. Huang Chien Hua, 28, and Haung Chien Yu, 23, were charged with illegal drug possession and trafficking, Narcotics Suppression Bureau deputy commissioner MajGeneral Suwat Itthikul said. “The two men have been leasing the two apartments since February to conceal the narcotics before smuggling them to Taiwan,” Suwat said. Reacting to a tipoff from customs authorities, which discovered a trail of unorthodox money transfers made by the two suspects, antidrug police began the investigation that led to yesterday’s raid and seizure. Suwat said the two suspects have for months been smuggling heroin in small amounts to the apartments from Tak province’s Mae Sot district near the Burmese border “The heroin was packed with dried fruit, nuts and fried durian in small packages destined for Taiwan,” he said. He said he suspected that Taiwan was another transit point for the heroin before it reached its final destination somewhere in Europe or North America. The two suspects remain in police custody pending an official report on the case. --The Nation 2004-08-31
