I have travelled on Jetstar and Jetstar Asia airlines many times (mostly on the BKK-Singapore) run. I have been most happy with the value that they offer. I prefer them to Air Asia when there is a directly comparative flight (though those AA air hostesses give the Singapore Girls a run for their money :o )

Anyway, my question concerns the longer flights between BKK and Oz...I guess these can run 7-10 hours. Has anyone taken Jetstars Starclass (business) class service and how does it rate against either Thai or Quantas for value and service? The price runs about 2x the cost of their basic economy service. For example, a flight from BKK to Brisbane is about B 36,000 and starclass is another B 30,000.

Haven't used it yet, but it's really more like premium economy than business class. I would use it personally, but then I'm 6"4, but an average size person would probably think it was an unnecessary expense unless they were comfortably off.

Starclass is a shi-t-show quite frankly. It's a 9 hour flight Melbourne to Bangkok, and if you imagine that at the very least you'll get some extra leg room out of the deal, you're mistaken.

I'm waiting to learn what Air Asia X's, X-tra class (same sort of deal, but cheaper) between the Gold Coast and Kuala Lumpur has to offer as far as leg room goes.

Isn't it a 38" seat pitch?

You also get stuff like a laptop power plug and Qantas FF miles in Starclass...but yeah, if you can't get a sub-60k price, it's not really worth it.

AirAsia rumoured to pursue a stake in Virgin Blue

A possible merger between Virgin Blue and AirAsia has been rumoured CAPA reports, however AirAsia has publically denied such rumours.

CAPA has argued that “all the pieces fit” for AirAsia to pursue Virgin Blue’s current majority owner, Toll Holdings, who have made it very clear that they wish to sell its 62% stake in the airline.

“Well cashed up and already partnered with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group in the Malaysian LCC’s long-haul offshoot, AirAsia X, music entrepreneur Tony Fernandes-led AirAsia would be an obvious target. And AirAsia has put its money where Australia is, by making its first route with AirAsia X an Australian one, from Gold Coast Airport to Kuala Lumpur,” says CAPA.

CAPA also argues that the potential for such a deal is significant because of Australia’s open and profitable domestic market, which offers the ideal base to establish a brand that can be exported across Asia.

I have used both econ and starclass from Melbourne to Bangkok.

The first time was in economy never again. Felt like a sardine. i am 6foot and 100kg.i used points from my Qantas ff for this one.

The most recent fight on the 6th of December 2007 was in starclass ,it was a one way ticket. Window seat.

Star class is ok, IT IS NOT bussiness class by any means. More like preimum economy .You get food, video screen and a travel pack.

However the seats are wider and only two abreast window to isle not three as in economy. It is a long flight 9.5hrs

Price and availabilty was the reason due to peak season and limited seats available on other carriers.

Hope this helps

Watchdog to probe Jetstar complaints

Victoria's consumer watchdog is to investigate complaints against Australia's discount airlines after hundreds of travellers were stranded interstate by Jetstar last week.

More than 300 passengers, including young children and elderly people, were abandoned at Sydney Airport by the Qantas subsidiary on Thursday night after a storm forced the cancellation of several flights and the domestic terminal was closed by security staff.

The airline and airport bosses blamed each other for leaving the passengers marooned, forcing some to sleep in a nearby bus shelter and others on the floor of the international terminal.

Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) will investigate recent incidents and could make recommendations for changes that might be required to strengthen the rights of customers.

Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson said an inquiry was warranted.

"There is no doubt that the emergence of discount airline fares in recent years has been of great benefit to consumers," he said.

"However, discounted fares should not mean that the rights of passengers are discounted.

"I am particularly concerned about the impact of these incidents on high needs passengers, such as children, the elderly and those with medical conditions who are particularly inconvenienced if left stranded interstate."

Mr Robinson said in recent years CAV had received an increasing number of complaints, including customers' ability to vary flight details and requesting refunds for late or cancelled flights, from travellers over low-cost airlines compared to full service airlines.
