Thai Guys With Coins In Their Ear

Featured Replies

sometimes my guy(from Isaan) will be running around the house with a coin in his ear. does this mean anything or is it just an isaan thing or maybe means he has holes in his pants pockets :-)

Why not just ask him?! :D

Perhaps it was a trend back in the days when young kids thought it was cool..

Honestly, i donno.. :D:o

Where else to keep the bus fare....som people really don't know nothing :o

Saw this among USA teenage guys in the 50's. Maybe someone saw an old flick and took up the fad again? :o

Asked the wife. her answer was...

"Oh...easy for keep teelak!"

So I guess it really just is a convenient place to stash it :o:D

did ask him several times. Mumbles some thing about fashion. Similar to Thai guys wearing thread bare jeans with slashes and holes in them

Consider it's Isaan: Maybe if you only have 1 baht (5 baht, 10 baht) to your name, where else would be such an honored place to flaunt your wealth? :o

I just asked my Isaan friend:

He says that if someone is constipated, a coin in the ear does the trick.

Said with a straight face. No joke.

It's Issan, I mean really. You should see their counter parts in the US. Sounds like the equivalant of red neck "fashion" wearing a greasy dirty baseball cap till it disintergates off their head.

Yes I have seen it done by 13, 14, 15 y.o. boys here in Phuket also, and it's just a mini fad or fashion thing every once in a while, mind you I have never seen a girl do it, guess they have more sense.. :o

Next time you see one, ask 'im if he's constipated...

My wife(from Isaan) told me her grandmother also used to keep a coin there.

Not a fashion thing. She just liked to keep a coin there was the reply.

I asked if she didnt have any pockets on her dress. She had, but liked having a coin in the ear.

Just a few years ago when I lived in Bangkapi, BKK, in a snooker hall when the guys played a game where several (6-8 of them) were playing at the same table, eliminating each other from the game. They picked a number from a hat before the game. This number was writen on a little plastic token, which was the size of a 5 baht. They all kept their token in the ear.

They too had pockets where they could have kept it.

Nobody could explain to me why they kept it there.

Always the same answer. They just kept it there.

This is the correct answer. It applies to both male and female.

One of my golfing buddies keeps a 1p coin in his ear, to use as his ball marker when we are on the greens. :o

About 20 years ago, when I first came to Thailand, it was VERY common. Almost everyone (younger, poorer males) had coins in their ear. I've always wondered, but felt too foolish then to ask!

or smaller ears :D

my hubby keeps coins in his ears sometimes, too, and he's from the north. always 5 baht coins. i guess 10 are too big and 1 will fall out. i don't think it has anything to do with fashion. i think it's simply a place to keep a coin. just like guys with hairbands here - practical, not fashion.

Well I've heard of the saying "couldn't tell his a.s.s. from his elbow" maybe same difference. :o
