Hi There Everyone In Issan!

Hi there guys,

Its my 5th trip to the land of smiles, and my third venture to Isaan.

Previous trips were:

1) With the BG girlfriend I met on my first visit to Pattaya, I stayed in the Korat style rural village with typical chicken and dog wake up call + the propaganda style radio tannoy which I found great at 6am! Loved it here, despite not having much to do - we went shopping, to the mall etc - no nightlife experienced here

- In-between here I learnt a lesson about this BG, she had 3 guys on the go, now married to some german man, moving on..

2) Last March I travelled with a friend to Korat, stayed at the Sima Tani and visited the Zoo, went to the mall and visited Osaka! - that was the daytime activities!

At night we found the Faraway club, then went to the usual Disco Update & Bar-nana.

We did manage to find (through the thai sima tani receptionist) a really good nightspot - which I can only describe as being a warehouse style concept with the dj booth in the middle of the dance floor and really booming music - it was great, but I had consumed lots of Thai soda whiskey by this point so no idea what the name was - anyone here have a clue?

3) I want to come back! but this time for longer, Im setting aside 5 days and would like some advice.

I think I have narrowed down my choices - basically through this forum and a handful of others

2 Days in Korat (didnt see enough last time)

3 Days in Surin (seems to have a good mix of reviews, FC etc)

Anyone have another opionion, I am interested in being busy through the day, seeing sights and just generally having a good wander around, talking with locals and escaping the western outlook on life.

Is there any events happening in Korat/Surin around the end of Feb?

On the evening we would like to go out have a drink, and then have some nightlife fun - wherever that takes us :o So there needs to be a good nightlife scene, this doesnt mean Ibiza though, we would be content & happy in a all Thai karaoke joint!

The rest of the holiday is to be spent in the usual BKK / Pattaya.

Thoughts?

I could do with help on transport - I have found the train times from Korat to Surin (great only 2 hours!) But would rather not get the bus from Pattaya as it takes forever, how hard is it to get the train from Pattaya to Korat?

Sorry for the disjointed post, happy Christmas to all

A couple of answers to some of your questions...

I'll be there the end of February. So there should be something happening :D . There's plenty of thai karaoke bars in and around Surin.

Travel wise, you can get the train from Bangkok to Korat, although it still takes a bit of time (probably longer if you come from Pattas first). You could get a taxi, it's a bit more expensive but faster. However I might be heading back from Pattas to Surin about that time myself, which will mean me driving through Korat.

Let me know some details and maybe I can help you out.

I'm not sure if Martin at the FC still does a taxi-service to and from Pattas, but you could try mailing him.

As daytime in Surin goes, you can also take a short hop to the Cambodian border and have a look over there. It only takes about 1 hour to get there by mini-bus. This will definatley get you away from the western outlook on life. However, if you want to talk to the local people you will need to speak thai, as very few of the natives speak english.

Thanks so much John mate - very quick reply!

Have a failry limited thai vocabulary, and big smile - which i found in the past really helps!

The cambodia trip really sounds a great idea, another reason to visit Surin then? - i guess leave Ubon, Khon Kean et al for another time?

Maybe Ive come to a cross roads where Pattaya can get a bit repetative, obviously would like some of the same aspects of PTT to be present (hey im being honest!) in the other places we travel to - from what I have read Korat / Surin its there but more secluded!

What is Soi Kola like?

When I get home I'll let you know my current ittinery - eg what dates I'll be departing Pattaya, would be great to have a drive up if we manage to synchronise.

Thanks again - khorb koon khap (sorry cheesy! - just getting excited now)

I suppose the best person to ask about the nightlife in Surin at the moment is Martin from the FC as apparently he has been doing the rounds (only joking).

Soi Kola is basically a street full of bars, it has 1 main go-go bar and quite a few karaoke bars. There is a big night club at the begining of the soi called Speed 3 (there is 1 one these in Korat also). This is full of thai's out getting smashed and having a good old dance, it's great fun, although a bit on the loud side.

They are plenty of back street places in and around Surin to have a quite drink or keep out of the public eye so-to-say. (Again ask Martin). Or try his Surin Nightlife column, he seems to know all the places..... :o

That best place to start your day off drinking would be at the FC first, and a few of the expats will you point you in the right direction. Although you will need transport to get to some of the more discreet places, (again Martin can help with this).

There's normally a boy's night out once or twice a week with different party's, however I tend to just go out every night, after all why spoil the habit of a life time :D .

I am heading down to Pattas in February sometime to meet up with a couple of mates, I'll only be staying a few days or so, and don't really have a set date yet.

So, where do you come from? Perhaps if we meet up it might make more sense to go to Surin first then travel back to Korat and then on to Bangers at the end.

John.....

Hi John/All,

I expect to depart from PTT on the 23rd Feb and return on the 28th. Ive yet to book hotels, so give me an idea what my departure date feels like to you?

Thats a better idea, Surin first then onto Korat - then the bus back to Pattaya!

This is my 5th time in Thai, and am trying to vary the experience - without losing sight on Pattaya (theres still some steam in us yet!)

Whilst in Surin Ive read its good to cycle around to see the sights, anyone aware of bike rental in Surin?

When you say the Surin nightlife column - do you mean the long post on this forum (its really informative, just not to the point (as theres plenty of banter between locals!))

Obviously the FC will be HQ, only concern is the recent news that it may be closed from Jan 31st?

Thanks again John, be good to meet up with some Thai vets!

ps - Im from Bradford, Mike (my co thaitravel-partner) is from Leeds and were 27, 25 respectivlty

cheers,

this guy deserves to be man of the year for saying his gf is a bargurl!

I would like to give the O.P. the benefit of the doubt, but..................................

As you are posting as a newbie and refer to your " B.G. girlfriend " in several parts that are far from complimentary comments and personal references to her status and history ???????

I tend to think you are baiting and mischief making.

Stupid me, I forgot about Martin's until I posted it, although he is talking about opening a no frills drinking bar.

Martin also rents out motorbikes.

The nightlife column is on the FC website, so does not infringe on any thaivisa rules. There's nothing bad on it, just a basic insight into some of the areas to visit.

The time sounds about right for me.

Aaahhhhh Yorkshire. There's a few other yorkshire guys up in Surin also, so you's will have some other people to grunt to (only joking :o ).

I am from the north east. A little bit older, but not a lot.

Keep in touch, if all goes well, I'm sure we can sort something out.

Some of the names I've called my ex misses from England are alot worse than Bargirl! Also I've no doubt he's probably not lying about her previous occupation so why the big kerfuffle?

Guys lets drop the 'BG' issue, it detracts from my origional intention - I made a sweeping statement that is regarded as against the rules of this forum, i accept that - and could inflame those who know/or in a relationship with a thai lady.

Theres plenty of websites that discuss the BG aspect, with various opinions on the subject! I'd rather not see this thread closed, cheers.

I know the rules as you kindly remind me of, rather that possibly getting the thread closed, i was allowing for the benefit of doubt, while alerting posters to the possibility of latching onto the uneccessary " BG " references and the usual reactions.

In turn it allows members to be able to assist any genuine requests for information and assistance.

Perhaps the O.P. is not intentionally doing any mischief, but as we all know to well, normally these sort of comments are immediately latched onto and the predictable adverse comments start to get posted.

No offence intended in my reply to the above post, but thought my intentions should be submitted to discourage any issues of a similar kind and misunderstandings of my observations.

I take any comments on board, both for and against and unless it is really serious i am quite happy to let them go and being a Yorkshire man i,m thick skinned enough not to take them to heart and i promise not to report anyone, so long as it,s not offensive.

Hey buddy i will be in Khon kaen for a week from 25th january , there is a bit of night life in the city, a couple of "night clubs in the hotels and there are 4 or 5 xpat bars as well as plenty of thai karaoke bars. I too am from gods own county in fact from the bradford postcde .My wifes from nr Khonkaen and we spend at least 5 days there when we go to LOS (twice a year). Feel free to private message me for any info on Khonkhan.

Although we live in the UK at present my wife and I are building a house about 60k from Khonkaen , almost half way to Udon , I am hoping to go for 2 months at a time maybe 2 or 3 times a year once the house is built.

I am sure where ever you end up you will have a great time .

Oh dear. They had better start to learn Hungarian then, as this is the most frequent language I hear eminating from your vecinity. Perhaps a drunken slur might suffice in most cases though, especially at the shing-a-shong.

Hey Mick,

Nice to here someone from the KLY made it out of the ghetto to the LOS! Your story is an inspriation.

Your advice is really appreicted thanks, I think will need to leave KK now to my 'unplanned' second trip which I guess will be around sept-oct.

I booked the Thong tarin, and Rachaphruk hotels yesterday - so will stick with Surin and Korat, I cant wait now - when I was in Korat last 2 times were a moving expereince and look forward to advancing this in Surin, possibly taking a day tour up to the cambodian border and other stuff which I'll ask the advice of FC group when we arrive!

Be good to see your house as its being built if you can upload some pictures (unless its already in the house building thread?)

Take it easy, happy new year!

Thanks MPDkorat, I am usually great after drinking at rememebring locations etc etc

The Thai whiskey and soda really does hit you hard, and on the occiasion I had spent 3 hours in Bar-nana (i think!) and then was driven to this secret location! Think it was a weekday as well, I couldnt beleive the atmosphere - the place was packed wall to wall, 2-3 dj's in a booth playing a selection of Thai and dance music - which to be honest suited our needs more than the Bar-nana inde rock scene going on there!

Hopefully will try and find this place again, thanks for your advice - Lee

Oh dear, I forgot to tell you, if you wanted a hotel booking Martin at FC or myself could have booked you a room at the Majestic Hotel which is newer. I have never stayed there but I hear very good things about it. Booking at the Thong Tharin is not the end of the world, that's where I always used to stay and is a nice hotel, however a little out-dated now. On the up-side to that there is a little place out back, which, you might find entertaining. It's not cheap but very good service (so I hear).

Still not to worry, you'll get plenty of information about the Cambodia trip from any of the local farangs who hang around the local bars, myself included. You can get a mini-bus from the bus station for about 100 baht return that departs about every 30 minutes or so, and the same on returning. Or if you rent a bike, you can always drive there yourself.

If you want to check out house building in thailand you can google freebeerforyorky, a mate of mine from Surin, who has a bit about it on there, when building his house. He also has some other stuff you might find interesting about thailand on there.

I'm no expert on Korat, but perhaps the bar you went to was the Speed discotheque, and there is another one of these in Surin which, if you liked that place, I think you will enjoy.

Feel free to ask for any information about anything, and I'm sure me or some of the other members can help you out with any questions you might have.
