I have interviewed a burmese maid & she tells me she is legal here to work. She has an ID which she gets from immigration every 12 months & pays around $8000B for it.

I read in a recent post about this & it said that they needed a thai to the paperwork for the permit expats are not allowed to do this?

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

She is lying to you. The id card is owned by the boss. So a Thai has to own her and the id card is issued to the maid, but addressed at the Thai´s residence or work place.

She should have turned that in if she quit or got fired.

And yes, only a Thai can own her. Sorry, own is what Thais say when they deal with the Burmese. I have a maid also, but at the moment, the govt is not issuing new id cards.

We had a couple of Burmese maids in the house at my mother in laws place in Samut Sakorn.

Not sure what it means but the only ones that ever stole anything/ran away were the Thais... :o

Thank you Somtamnication, but why can only the thai's "own" a Burmese maid?

For what i know, many Chinese/Thai have Burmese maid, monthly wage is ridicule.

I think the government let that happen as it is difficult to get Thai maid.

The Burmese person is register by the employer, who need to do that so often, and the situation is never sure if they will be accept or refuse next time!

Well, now you are asking me to disect the Thai psyche. I doubt even Freud could do it.

No idea.

Fact is, there is something wrong that she has this id card when she should not have it in her possesion if she is unemployed.

Cops, however, do not care. If they see her with the card, they let her go, particularly towards the end of the month and they visit the local markets waiting for them to walk by.

I think housekeeper/maid might be on the list of forbidden occupations for non-border country foreigners. Good luck though, sounds cheaper than going for PR.

The general trend of opinion is not good here, unfortunately my expereinces quite similar. Very difficult to process the ID, renewing or new ID questions should be asked of your local council office and the labour department, don't believe anything said here to reassure you! If you get the ID process wrong, you can be prosecuted and deported. I found the Burmese to be far more arguementive, less trust worthy, but having better English which was not important to me!! Out of 5 I tried, only one, the first one, was excellent, the other 4 drove me up the wall. Went back to Thai maids and would not change for anything...

the reality is that there are thousands of Burmese in Thailand -"sponsored" by thai citizens or thai companies- who work or look to work for other persons or companies other than their sponsors (with the permission of the latter). if the maid has an ID it should be not too difficult to find out whether her present sponsor allows her to work at a place of her choice. i don't know however whether this "done thing" violates any thai law.
