Security Tightened In Bangkok

ANYONE even joking they have a bomb or a gun in any bags should instantly receive a big knot on his noggin from a officers night stick and promply be trotted off to the local lockup.

This joking "I have a bomb/gun" bullshit is the epitomony of ignorance and makes a mockery of thousands who have given their lives to prevent just such acts from plaguing law abiding nations worldwide.

Doubled and trippeled!

This forum has once again become a place where idiots and ignorance gather together to beat each other in demonstrating their intelligence.

No matter what Thais do or not do it's always wrong, it's always useless, stupid, laughable, rediculous, unprofessional and, and, and....

Happy New Year to everybody and if for any reason a bomb goes off somewhere may some of the super funny jokers in this forum be the victims instead of security guards or innocent people.

I second this wholeheartedly. I happy New Year to the Forum. May brains and reason grow, and ignorance and arrogance wither, or at least cause their bearers massive headaches in 2008.

Well, all the joking aside. I just want to wake up in the morning, still alive and with all my bodily parts still intact after having a good enjoyable night out to welcome the new year in.

At least some thought has been put into this and security has been tightened to protect all even though some think it's not good enough.

I'd rather have some than none so that maybe my family have 50% less chance of taking me home in a box on new year.

May everyone have a good enjoyable and prosperous New Year.

Then the best security they could provide is police who pull drunk drivers off the road -- a farmorelikely cause of death for the perpetrators and the innocent than terrorism.

Fully agree,nothing to add!

The joke isn't about people being blown to shreds and vapor. The joke is on the joke of a pathetic "Security" system. Whether you like it or not most of what goes on in the country, the official stuff, is a joke. We can say that this is wrong when it obviously is: Closing gas stations to save money on electricity while people are stranded, the raid in panthip where they found one pornographic vcd, the fashion hub attempt, Sonthi being jailed for defamation, slowdown of mail means economic slowdown, booze ban on elections when hundreds die a week ater on the new year, alcohol sales restriction absed on what time it is, banning fo TRT members who set up a party months later and run in elections, arrest warrants and extradition of Thaksin, jet fighter upgrades, valentines day and the police paying attention to the kids to make sure they don't boink, "suicides" from high-rise condos, monthly crackdowns.

tl;dr: Stoop being so butthurt about people complaining and enjoy the new year you moody bastard! :o

ok - I won't say anything out loud.

But I carry my own bomb with me , because as we know the chances of there being two bombers at the same time are astronomically high. :o:D

A bombing scene is an incredibly sickening event. These crimes are committed by cowardly people and the victims are arbitrary. Women, children, fathers, sisters..friends. Imagine your loved ones or even yourself lying on the street with a limb or eyesight gone. In fact just lying in a Bangkok street is a nasty experience. These events and the chain of events that lead up to the act surely are no joking matter. People that joke about or belittle victims, first responders or others that put their lives on the line to predict, prevent and mitigate terrorist events should be locked up. They are in my opinion no different that the heinous sick individuals who commit the act itself.

I fully agree Bangkok has a long way to go in the prevention dept, but I believe progress is being made albeit slowly.

I wish all the expat's and other people that frequent this site a wonderful and prosperous 2008. Be safe, care about each other.

I think it should be said for the record that if you joke with security people

in general about having a bomb or gun, you will probably end up

being interrogated for hours someday. I know of actual experiences.

Be careful with security people.

well said. Definitely not a joking matter.

Have done 270,000 km in this country without having ever been pulled over, but don't see a problem with it at all as it happens I don't drink - not even beer. Maybe I miss some fun maybe not. Might be up to each ones personal perception.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! with or witout alcohol.

the security at BTS and siam paragon is horrible though, when they check your bags they simply ask "do you have a bomb inside?" and when i said "yes" to see what would happen, they simply laughed and let me pass inside.

Did you tell them you were returning the bomb because it didn't match the color of your car? They could possibly point you in the right direction to find one that would be more suitable.

Actually it probably didn't match the color of the g'friend's shoes or nail polish. The constant nagging meant the C-4 had to go back for some laser treatment then lunch at Greyhound. But those bar girls keep showing up and spoiling her day..She has to put a finger to her nose - esp when they are accompanied by the farang boyfriends. Then there are those pesky majority poor people thinking they have a right to control who runs the country. Not for long, she thinks. Hmmm, red shoes are boring now. Saw them on a bargirl..

The police in bangkok is a joke, they catch me for few days of overstay when I alredy had a ticket way out of thailand, and put me in jail, I couldn't believe it, even more because I have asked at inmigration office and there they told me to pay the overstay at the airport. They make me a lot of money to let me go, and didn't gave any paper for it, so asume they wasn't inmigration police, possible not even tourist police as they almost doesn't speak any english. But been in jail is not a good posicion to protest. And out of the police I try to tell somebody and only recive laughs for answer. Been in thailand you easily realize most of people love more some many than their own ass. So stop trying to complain as I love my ass.

Well said.

Some people seem to care about one senseless death but not another?

They are making an effort, which is far more than can be said for the foolish and foolhardy who think it is cute to joke about life and death matters.

Encourage the use of designated drivers; that's something we can all do on an individual level.

And voice your opinion for the betterment of Thailand instead of always finding fault with what they do.

Have a safe and prosperous new year.

Just read this on Yahoo news:

Thai bombing hits New Year's festivities

SYDNEY, Australia - A bomb attack wounded 27 people Monday in a Thai tourist town where people had gathered to celebrate the New Year, officials said.

Muslim insurgents were suspected in the attack in Sungai Kolok on the border with Malaysia, where two blasts went off inside a hotel discotheque and one in the basket of a motorcycle outside a hotel, army spokesman Col. Akara Thiprote said.

Hopefully there were no other incidents. Please stay safe everyone, and have a Happy New Year wherever you are.

Or maybe UNFORGETTABLE THAILAND.

After a bombing at a Marriott i Jakratta, I believe, everyone was put metall detector at the entrance. Half the time it wastn't even on

post-54955-1199091767_thumb.jpg

You must either be living or working at the Marriott in Jakarta - I mean obviously you need to be there all time to know that the scanners are no turned on half the time.

After staying at an Intercontinental hotel for six months in Saudi I would not critisise the Thai's, when you went through the metal detector your computer bag was passed around the side and handed back when you were inside with no checks.

, and Saudi is suposed to be high risk

Security alert in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Police and the military beefed up security at venues where New Year countdowns and celebratory events were held in Bangkok last night.

All 38 locations were guarded with a company of soldiers in addition to local police. Half of the venues, including CentralWorld shopping plaza, were designated for extra security measures.

A police spokesman said Air Force personnel were responsible for patrols and security in northern Bangkok while the Army was in charge of the central area of the capital and the Navy patrolled areas on the Thon Buri side of the Chao Phya River.

Policemen and municipal police provided extra security in overall metropolitan areas.

In northern Thailand, more than 1,000 soldiers with combat units under the Third Army Area were on alert, while police and military officers, both in uniform and plain-clothes, were mobilised in crowded areas.

In Chiang Mai, two full battalions of soldiers under the 7th Infantry Regiment set up road checkpoints along two routes connecting urban areas with outside districts and Mae Hong Son.

In Phuket, a large number of Thai and foreign tourists packed various venues for celebrations and New Year countdown parties. All famous beaches, including Patong, Kata, Karon and Phrome Thep Peninsula, were busy with tourists and locals.

A Tourism Authority of Thailand official said beachfront hotels had been fully reserved and that around Bt2 billion had been spent. Suwalai Pinpradab said all chartered flights to the island directly from Europe had been booked from now till the end of April.

More than 17,000 campers and tourists flocked to Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima for a holiday break starting on Saturday. Rangers said there had not been any parking space available since Sunday because the park was fully occupied by campers.

In Surat Thani, most major roads have been clogged by traffic due to around 30,000 visitors heading for the southern province. Ferries shuttling from mainland Surat Thani and neighbouring Chumphon province to Koh Samui and Koh Pha-ngan have been operating non-stop.

Around Bt200 million is estimated to have been spent in Surat Thani. All hotel rooms and other accommodation were fully booked long before the four-day holiday break.

When the security check points went up I asked one of the guards how long it would last. He said just until the end of the new years celebration. I noted that they are still up.

Is there a threat that is still persistent and could it be tied to the now uncertain fate of the PPP?
