September 5, 200421 yr Hi! Ok. Can anyone help me? I gonna marry my thai boyfriend in Jan -05. I move to Thailand in Nov-04. From Sweden I get maybe a non-immigrant visa that I can get 1 year extension in Jan-05. In june-05 we go to Sweden for 2-3 months, then I want to change my name to his last name, then I need a new passport with my new name . How about my visa (1 year) can they transfer that to my new passport and what about when I enter Thailand again when I have a new passportnumber?
September 5, 200421 yr Yes, they can change everything over to your new passport. I took my husband's name when we got married, but then he has a nice short name (only two syllables) which is easily pronouncable. After you get married but before your 3 month non-immigrant visa expires, go to your local immigration office and get all the info you need from them to apply for the one year extension. Since you already know you are going back to Sweden make sure to get a re-entry permit too. If you think you will be leaving more than once before your year is up get a multi-entry one. Some advice: we show (2) photocopies of my husband's business license, tabien baan (house registration papers), marriage license, passport (all pages with anything from thailand on them), his most recent tax payment slip, and photocopies of our bank book (apparently not necessarily required but our local immigration asks for them). After you get your new passport and return to Thailand go back to your local immigration office and they will transfer your visa and extension to your new passport. Don't forget to sign with your new name Good Luck!

September 6, 200421 yr Just realized tho, that you will be getting your new passport in Sweden, probably you will need to go to the Thai consulate in Stockholm and get the visa transferred there, but it should be just as simple a task.

She plans to be on an extension of stay rather than a visa so the Consulate will have no authority (this is an immigration police matter). I would discuss with immigration and perhaps they will allow her to re-enter using old passport re-entry permit and then do the transfer after her entry. I would just do a couple of visa runs myself and do the extension of stay paperwork after name change. I assume she can not get a new passport/name change done by her Embassy here in Thailand?
September 6, 200421 yr I don't know about sweden but the US Embassy did mine, I didn't have to get a new passport if I recall, they just changed the name in the old one.
September 6, 200421 yr My guess is that the new type of Swedish passports (aka EU passports) do not allow for name change in them (the data page is hermetically laminated). I reckon you will need to get a brand new passport for the name change. /Meadish
September 21, 200421 yr I suggest you get the name change done at you Embassy here. It probably means a new passport. Then you can take both passports to Immigration and get the visa transfered. That should be quite straight forward. The Embassy will give you a letter confirming the change. If you leave Thailand, even with a re-entry permit, I think you may have trouble coming back in on a different passport, with a different name. Too complicated for the guy at the immigration counter in the airport. However, no harm in asking your local immigration office, about the best way to approach the task.
