I was out rebuilding my mountain bike in the driveway. Went in to get a cold one and when I came out my Chi-Chi greeted me with a messy face and head. :o

I guess she got under the bike and wiggled up against the fly wheel or front crank.

Gave her a bath and got some of it off.

Is there any secret potion or application for removing grease from a dog?

Or is it just "lather, rinse, repeat"?

for some reason I think I remember something about peanut-butter..... (or I'm just remembering that for getting gum out of a pocket or some ones hair)

Citrus oil and some gentle detergent in a water solution helps. Followed by a good rinse.

Gets most of the grease out and leaves the doggy smelling like a nice orange/grapefruit

Long winded story:

My sister's golden decided to be a goof and lie down in the goop as I was cleaning my deore and using my trusty chainmate to give the chain a bath. I use Bio Chainbrite which is a 100% Biodegradable chain and component cleaner. Diluted some of it with water and using a towel and was able to get most of the surface crud off the fur. (Didn't go deep into the coat, just surface). This stuff is fairly gently on my skin and doesn't leave me gagging like conventional degreasers.

OK you say, you don't have access to the Park catalogue so how's this help? Well I looked up the ingredients and see;

d-Limonene, Non-ionic Surfactant (detergent), *2-Butoxy Ethanol, Methyl Soyate

Limonene is basically citrus oil. It's derived from the leftover rinds of lemon and orange peels. I don't know who stocks it in these parts though, but it's got to be around since it's popular with a lot of industrial users now because of its low carcinogenity and lower likelihood of causing skin irritation than the usual harsh solvents.

Because there is grease on the face, and near the mouth and eyes suggest you avoid getting to close to those areas as the vapors may sting. (It hasn't done it to me, but I'm not a dog.)

Since you already washed the dog, I'd avoid bathing the dog with any soap after this for a few days to avoid drying out the skin and coat and removing the natural oils that will help shed the grease.

Hope this helps.

Dish washing soap cuts grease really well.....I use it on my hands after working on the car, with much better results than regular soaps.

Of course, be careful with the pup.....but I'm sure you know that.

Good luck,

Eric

hello, our stupid mutt is always going under the car or up against dirty motorbike.nearly on a daily basis and hes all white.washing up liquid in concentrated form shifts a lot. rub area with undiluted first then rinse well......if its really bad then something like nail polish remover seems to do the trick, obviously only use small amount on a rag and rinse after getting grease off.doesnt seem to cause him any probs but he dont like the smell of it so be quick.
