I want to treat my girl and install her a thai sattelite,where we live in nongki the tv reception is rubbish plus only 3 channels to watch,ive already got dynasat which ive had for 4 years,for a one off payment of 14.000baht,this is all english speaking and mainly for myself,i heard there was a thai one for around 4 to 5000 baht installed and no monthly payments,but i cant find that info,and my girl will not walk in the shop and ask shes the shy type,any info would be greatly appreciated..

My wife and I live in Loei province. She looked at a system that cost a one time 6,000 baht. She would be happy with it but said that it had VERY few English speaking channels. Must be a Thai Malay satellite.

I am also looking for a satellite dish. I would prefer a one time charge and I am not to worried about English channels, since I don;t watch TV, but one English news channel would be nice. What I do want however is a dish that I can run three TVs from each being able to have their own programing. Does anyone have any recommendations? I presently have UBC, but can only run one TV from it. Does anyone know if I can get extra boxes to run extra TVs, and would there be a one time charge or an extra monthly charge and how much? I believe you can order extra boxes from UBC. There is a monthly subscription per box which is the same regardless of package (about bt300). There is an installation fee also which is rather steep.

I have been playing with a number of dish options in Surin. The Sat guy near the Farang Connection is very good, and also speaks a little bit of English.

I have a 7 foot steer dish, that goes from Pas 8 to Pas 7 for Free to Air. Pas 8 carries ABC Asia, and as you scan across the sky you can get BBC News, CNN Al Jazerra, Russia Today, NHK English etc etc, on a number of Satellites all for free.

The really impostant thing is you need to know a little about Satellites , their positions etc and then you can enjoy for more the free services. Movable dishes are not perfect, but they will offer you a good choice.

A moveable package typically would be 15 - 20 k Baht.

I have had PSI for some years and never had any problem. I live in Buri Ram province near Lam Plai mat.

We paid a once off fee of about Bt16,000 and that included a large screen TV set, setting up the huge moving dish, receiver box and access to about 200 channels (8 satellites) Most channels are in Chinese, Arabic or Indian but i do get BBC, Australian network (The old ABC) and about 10 english speaking channels plus about 10 Thai channels.

I don't watch much TV but like to see the evening news on Australia network and BBC. ESPN is in Chinese but then I am quite happy to watch car or motorbike racing, tennis, football etc. without commentary.

On two occasions after a storm we have lost the signal because the dish has moved and the guy will come and set it up again for a couple hundred baht.

I am interesed in getting PAS 8 but have been told by the guy that installed my dynasat dish that it cant be done. Surely if you are in Surin and I am in Ubon I should be able to get this satellite. Where can I find out some info to realign my sat dish to pick up this PAS 8 sat.

Thanks Khutan. That's good info. You posted while i was preparing my post. Where can i get info on satellite co-ords and how to locate and lock in to the available channels. The catalogue provided by PSI appears to be comprehensive but is in Thai and i can not use it. I have tried to reprogram my setup a couple of times and finally had to get the technician in as i made a complete mess of it.

Sezzo should be no trouble to get PAS 8 and that will give you access to Australia network, BBC and some good English speaking Japanese channels. i have had PAS 8 with PSI for sometime as mentioned previously. I am near Buri Ram.

It depends whether you have a fixed or a moveable dish. It sounds like you have a fixed dish. You say you have D***M which is on 146E (Agila) and you want PAS (Intelsat) 8 at 166E. Basically you just need to get a compass and move your dish 20 degrees further east and also decrease the elevation/inclination of your dish very slightly (the angle from the vertical).

East in this context means east of south. Thus 5 degrees east is only 5 degrees away from due south. This may be hard to get your head around but a movable dish is centred on due south. The dish then rotates in an arc which encompasses the easterly and westerly satellites within its limits of travel. These satellite are all positioned in an arc in the sky to make this possible (the Clarke belt). This line of satellites in the sky tapers down at each end, which is why the elevation of the dish must be reduced as you move further from due south to either east or west.

The complication is that while due south is very close to just that in the UK, an adjustment has to be made in other parts of the world (known as the azimuth). This should be about +97 degrees for PAS8 in Thailand, but depends where you are located. See:

All this probably made you rush to ring the installer, but the basic point that you have to move your dish about 20 degrees still holds true. You will need to be very precise to find the new satellite. If you do not have a meter, you will need to tune your receiver to a strong channel on the new satellite and put the TV where you can see it as you move the dish. You are looking for the signal indication to rise and a picture to appear. Given that you are moving west-east and also changing the elevation a little this can be quite tricky. Don't change the elevation much and mark the original position on the adjustment thread. Ditto the original 146 position (make a scratch on the pole or use a piece of tape. Sometimes it helps to slowly rock the dish a little, side to side and up and down, looking for signs of a signal.

The thing that strikes me though is that you get so much more on 146E than on 166E that it is not worth changing. Perhaps what you should get is a movable dish or a second dish with switch and you can then watch both.

Create a New Sat on your box and add the frequencies of the first few transponders. You can get the list from here http://www.satcodx5.com/1660/eng/

Then move your dish until its nearly horizontal, and use the Sat Edit, then Position option, have one of the first Transponders on the menu like 3.741, 3.790 and say 4.060. Step your dish back one step at a time and look at the signal strength on each of the TP (Transponder) frequencies. After as few as 5 and as many as 25 steps you should see Pas 8. Move it until you get the best signal quality NOT signal strength.

You can also add all the TP frequencies and the other stuff like symbol rate polarity etc and put your dish on Auto - it can take a while and also put a heavy load on your actuator.

BTW ABC Asia seems to be on one of the poorest beams for PAS 8

If you have a movable dish the above advice may work well, but the problem is that Intelsat 8 is at the extreme eastern end of the arc as viewed from Thailand and is quite likely to be beyond the eastern limit of travel on your dish. By this I mean you hit the end stop before you get to the satellite. If that is the case, you have to adjust the bracket on the actuator arm to shift everything to the east. Be careful not to change the alignment of the dish, since it will already be set up to follow the Clarke belt. The advice I gave earlier on changing the elevation was only for a fixed dish. Moving everything to the east will of course lead you to lose some western satellites. In situations like this, some people upgrade from an 18 inch to a 24 inch actuator.

You are correct that a larger actuator is far better. With a 24 inch you can see most everything from Pas 2 to Pas 7. I have seen Pas 2 from both Bangkok and Suphanburi, but that was on a 10-foot steer dish. There is another guy I know who also gets Pas 2 from a 7 foot fixed dish on the top of his Condo. It looks like the dish is broken as its nearly pointing flat at the horizon.

I am not an expert, but I do have two dishes here in Denmark. As far as I know, you will need LNB twin and two receivers to be able to see two different channels on two different TVs in the same time. If you want to see three different channels on three different TVs in the same time you will need a LNB quad (four) or a LNB twin and a LNB single and a receiver for each TV.

The suggestion about LNBs is a good one, but this still raises some problems if used with UBC. There is a published tariff for multiple UBC receivers (which their agent then installs) but this is expensive. In the conventional set-up each receiver needs its own smart card. Without the card problem it would not be so expensive to drive three TVs because many types of fairly inexpensive box have or will accept the required type of Irdeto 2 conditional access module (CAM) for UBC. The solution used by some is to buy a 'card splitter' (the cheaper ones are 2-way and 4-way), which will read your official card and distribute the required 'talk back' to dummy cards in each receiver. This won't work with overseas systems like NDS but is okay with Irdeto 2. Card splitters are sold by some of the main Thai dealers. If this is too complicated, some people do one of the following (a) purchase a cheap smartcard for the basic Thai channels for one receiver and use the full UBC card for premium channels on another TV (b ) supplement the UBC system with a C band system for the FTA Thai channels and use the two systems to feed separate TV sets.

Ok on the LNB Question you can get a Universal Ku and C Band LNB. Its operated with a Diseq, and the Cband has the Low Voltage with the KU the High voltage. You can manually tell the box whick Diseq to choose.

Using a properly set up Diseq, you can control multiple LNB's or even the dish (Its very slow though) here is a linky to show a 2 box setup. http://www.satellitedish.com/DiSEq_Guide.htm You can normally get a box that has 4 positions, so if you don't like a steer dish then you can have multiple dishes operating frm a diseq switch.

Getting back to Pas 8, I recently played with my dish and was also able to get Pas 2. I got a 45% signal with 30% signal quality. Problem was I lost Pas 7 which has some interesting channels.

If you have a Fixed Dish for Pas 8, you will need to do some preparation. First you will need to set up a New Sat in Sat Edit. Then you will need to add a good number of these TP frequencies that you can find here http://www.lyngsat.com/intel8.html If You don't understand this web page then DO NOT play with your box, pay the local Sat guy about 1000 Baht and he will do it all for you. If you do understand that page, then release the retaining bolt holding the vertical pisition on the dish until it is nearly horisontal. Turn your box on and then select TP 6 or 3829 H then carefully tighten the bolt until your dish rises from Horizontal and eventually after some hard turning, you will get PAS 8. You will see the Signal Strength then quality rise until you get a sufficient signal.

Personally its too much like hard work for 1000 Baht, and the local dealer will do it all.
