SeaVisionBurma
Would appreciate any fellow forum friends letting me know of good airfare packages to Hong Kong. Any airline considered except Air Zambia. Considering a trip there in early September with Khun Girlfriend, and now sniffing out prices. Also any knowledge or recommendations for good hotels, prefer around Kowloon/Tsimshatsui, but Central also okay. Broadband in the rooms preferable but not critical. Any recommended side trips away from HK? China? Macau? Thanks in advance
Roger13
Hi SeaVisionBurma, Cathay Pacific are doing some really Cheap promotional tickets on SOME routes just now but I don't know if that includes their Hub in Hong Kong. Some years ago now, but I definitely enjoyed my trip to Macau on a Hydrofoil. And a Trip up the Pearl River to Guangzhou, and back to HK by Trian, via Shenzhen. Also a Boat Trip to Lantau Island - where there is a Giant Buddha Statue (for Khun GF) - built in recent years. I enjoyed cycling one afternoon on Lantau and the various Fish Restaurants there that people visit just for Dinner from HK Island. In future I hope to make a Trip to the Great Wall & the Terracotta Warriors. Have a nice Trip Roger
SeaVisionBurma
Many Thanks Roger, Nice info, will certainly give those tips a go. The buddha on Lantau is also a great idea - have to keep Khun GF happy. Thanks again SVB
Roger13
Hi SVB, Maybe I should have mentioned: Macau was a day Trip with a Group of friends which we "Organised" ourselves (just got on the Hydrofoil) Lantau - two of us went for a few days. Hotel there was OK. Organised ourselves the trip ourselves using the Regular Boat Service. But I have been taken many times there for Dinner on our Company's Boat. Gaungzhou - this was an Organised Group thru a Travel Agent who did all the Ticketing & Visas (Group Visa - the only way to go at that time) But it is several years back !! I would sure like to hear how you get on. (I had the chance of seeing the Giant Buddha in various stages of being constructed - very interesting. AND when the painter paints the eyes of the Buddha - he must not look directly at them - he has to paint them using a mirror ...) Roger
Jade
Both Cathay Pacific and Finnair have very good fares currently, which can be purchased with bundled accommodation. I always stay at the Kowloon Hotel on Nathan Road. The rooms are somewhat small, but facilities and location excellent with complimentary in-room internet, and just a short stroll to the subway and star ferry connecting you to Hong Kong island. Roger13
Hi Jade, Any Idea of Current Room rates please? - at the Kowloon Roger
SeaVisionBurma
After doing some more checking, the internet reveals some gems: Novotel Century Hong Kong, and Novotel Century Harbour View both have "Smiles" campaigns. HK$528 per night for Harbour View, and HK$736 for Century Hong Kong. PLUS pay with Visa card any 2 nights, get the 3rd free. So my 6 day trip will cost only USD$ 45 per night or thereabouts. I'll also check Jade's Kowloon Hotel plug- I'm a sucker for free in-room internet. With the accommodation money saved - can afford to do the Thai Business 2-for-1 promotion airfare at average price of 11,500 baht return per ticket. I don't mind sitting up in the pointy end of the bus when its that cheap. Or go cheaper and get the Cathay flight. Or even cheaper - Sri Lankan economy return tickets round trip for 5,900 baht!! Still leaves time and money to check out Roger's side-trips for a couple of days before heading back to work. This Hong Kong trip is looking good. stevenjm
The Park Hotel in Kowloon is popular and has good rates and comfortable rooms and good location. For a side trip I would strongly recommend getting the train to the border(about half an hour from Kowloon) pay about 80hk for a visa (at the station)and walk through into shenzhen and follow the crowd to some of the best shopping you will ever see. dvd's software electricals you name it .and all at ridiculous prices(shenzhen is home to some of chinas largest electrical goods manufacturers.) Jade
Hi Roger, If you want to stay at the Kowloon Hotel, try to get a air/accommodation package from Bangkok. There are many packages on offer but I prefer TVAIR, as they have competitive prices and never any hassle. The packages include two nights accommodation, and from memory you can extend for additional nights at 1950 baht per room/night which is very good value considering the standard of hotel and its location in Kowloon. Cathay Pacific and Finnair have very good fares right now. Hope this helps. Jade
