Us Democrats Can Vote Here In Bangkok On Feb 5 And 9 (2008)

The Democrats Abroad organization in Thailand is hosting two events for Democrats to vote at polling stations in Bangkok. By hosting polling stations in Bangkok, the Democrats Abroad organization is simplifying the process of overseas voting. All you have to do is become a registered member with their organization, which you can do on the day of. By voting in the polls, your vote will be sent to the headquarters of Democrats Abroad in Switzerland to be cast. Therefore, you will be voting for the presidential primary with Democrats Abroad instead of within your state.

  • February 5 – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. – The polling station will be open at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT), Maneeya Plaza Building, Penthouse Floor, 518/5 Ploenchit Road, Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330.
(A map is available on website at www.fccthai.com)

  • February 9 – 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – The polling station will be open at the Roadhouse Barbecue, 942/1 Rama IV Road, Surawong, Bangkok (corner of Rama IV and Surawong Roads), Second Floor.
(A map is available at www.roadhousebarbecue.com)

So why should you vote for President via our Global Primary rather than in your home state primary?

  • A large "turnout" of overseas voters will help focus attention on issues which primarily affect overseas citizens, such as inequalities in taxation, voting rights, ineligibility for Medicare benefits, etc.
  • Your vote will count alongside those of other members of Democrats Abroad towards the allocation of Democrats Abroad's 22 delegates to the Democratic National Convention. As such, your individual vote carries significantly more weight than a vote in a state primary or caucus
  • Given this year's early primary schedule, ballots requested from your home state may not arrive in time to complete and return
  • If your voting state votes by caucus and does not have a primary, you would have to fly home to participate in choosing the presidential nominee!

Hey is there a Republican abroad organization? My mind stills functions, and I still work. :o

Goatee,

Do you have to be registered as an overseas voter in your old state?

If you are registered as an overseas voter in your old state, is your vote with Democrats abroad really valid?

What about the general election? (Also possible to vote with Democrats abroad for that?)

Republicans, we don't care! Your turn is over.

Well, maybe so. But my County has a very efficient absentee ballot system and I have already voted in my State Democratic primary. You cannot vote twice... but as they (used to) say in Chicago: Vote Early and Vote Often!

FYI: I am listed with my local Board of Elections to automatically receive absentee ballots. But I am persuaded by the argument that Democrats Abroad is making. Namely that Democrats Abroad can advocate more effectively for various issues that US expats care about.

Do you have to be registered as an overseas voter in your old state?

You simply register to join Democrats Abroad at their polling station. Then you vote in the primary.

If you are registered as an overseas voter in your old state, is your vote with Democrats abroad really valid?

Your vote is valid. But you can only vote once and in one location here or by absentee ballot.

What about the general election? (Also possible to vote with Democrats abroad for that?)

This is only for the Democratic primary election. For the November election I will use the absentee ballot that my board of elections will be sending me.

FYI: My state (California) only allows overseas voters to vote in Federal elections-- not local candidates or propositions. This is true in most states.
