I currently have Ipstar Satellite Service, which a lot of the time is utterly useless, technical support and service almost non-existant..

As my contract is almost up I wonder is there an alternative,I am based in N/E Thailand ,70km from Sakhon Nakhon.

For the last two days I am unable to even open Hotmail,The technician says it is my old PC at fault but my mate at Roi-et with a new Laptop has the same problem...

Any advise appreciated..

I am also unfortunate enough to have TOT Crapstar. I have heard all the excuses. For several months they blamed it on the weather. The rainy season is long finished and the service still stinks. It was also my computer and Windows problems. I have Linux on another hard drive and it is no better. To totally eliminate my computer, I have a VERY good laptop. It is a Lenovo T43p. It is exactly the same. I no longer get excuses. They say if I am not happy, they will stop the service. My only other option is GPRS. It is slow but normally works. Believe me, if there were ANY other options Crapstar would be gone. Last night and this morning Crapstar was down and I was using GPRS.

I’m afraid this situation is just normal , if you look at the continuous

Daily postings from people who are so fed up with the poor quality

of the internet service , we have to remember here in Thailand

what you pay for and have been promised means absolutely nothing

Customer service is as bad as it could get , guarantees and assurances are

Just words to fob you off, pay your money and then they couldn't care less

what a sad state of affairs ....

They didn't promise any real speed, you just pay for the connection and that's what you pay for!!

If you read the fine print of your contract you'll find out that there isn't any guaranty for speed!

Even if you pay for a leased line, they guarant a min. of 80% of the speed your contract ru nd for (TRUE) and that only from your loacation to the ISP and back but NOT any guaranty abiut the speed to connected servers on the local and international Internet!

Lack of available bandwith! That is the real problem for all ISP's!

For me I got the ToT 256k deal back in July.  Up tell Dec it worked just fine could not understand how others were not getting at least he 256.  But in Dec my day time speeds have dropped in half.  More often then not its fine again arounf 8pm.  We did just have a near 24 hour total outage, but its been working just fine after it came back up 256k.  I can live with it and think the day time speeds will be back when the tourest go home.  I was going to upgrade to 512 but others post have put me off and think it was a good idea to wait if its not going 256 in the daytime I don't see 512 working any better then this does. Only option is another company with the same equipment on the same satellite, or GPRS which is limited to 20k (yea 2.5Kb) in this area if it stays connected at all.  Thats the reason I went to IPstar in the first place.  I have a cell phone tower 100 feet from where I sit and its worthless.  We have no phoneline within 10km. So 1500baht a month for what I get is the only game around. :o

There are better and much more reliable satellite internet providers available, however you'll have to pay through the nose for them!

iSatasia is the biggest, two advantages, their hubs are located in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur so they are on a very reliable backbone, and secondly, they use the C-band, which is much more reliable and does not have problems with adverse weather unlike the Ku-band (which iPSTAR uses).

Check out following link, but make sure you are sitting down :o

My connection via satellite is no problem.  It takes a vary haeavy down pour to stop it. and even in the latest outage my connection to ToT was fine.  Its been ToT's connection to the internet that is the problem.  The satellite itself is like a rock.  Signal 85 to 90 and EsNO 13.5 to 14 even in a good rain.  I think the connection ratio in the travel season gets out of whack.  They don't want that overhead in the off season.  1500B for 256k is enough of my nose, I ll try to keep the rest.  I can't help but think that it will get better, but then I have been waiting for normal phone service for more then 8 years. :o
