MiniVDO: People still continue to show their condolences on the passing of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana.

People from all walks of life in Phuket still make visits to the Provincial Hall to offer their condolences for the passing of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana. This group was led by Rasada Mayor Surathin Lienudom. Also in honour of the princess, the Provincial authority is arranging a mobile volunteer medical unit to the remote island of Koh Maprao in Muang district to provide health services for local residents. The late princess headed the volunteer medical team to the island in 2004 where it helps improve the locals’ quality of life.

The Television of Thailand, Phuket and the Television Brunei ( RTB ) have agreed and signed their cooperation framework for an exchange program for news after their action plan meeting took place in Phuket during January 14 – 15th. The meeting’ s agreement co-chaired by Television of Thailand, Phuket director Wanpen Upton and RTB’s acting deputy Director Mr. Hj. Hamiddon Hj. Ibrahim also detailed that their items will focus on tourism, Islamic values and culture, current affairs, education and investment. They agreed to exchange their news four times a month under the ASEAN Television News Exchange platform hoping that the new link will provide more information about the people of both countries in the area of mutual interest. This agreement followed the 6th Joint Committee Meeting under the Government of Thailand and the Government of HM the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussaram on cooperation in the field of Information and Broadcasting held in Brunei in August 2007.

Scientists and experts plus related officials from over 20 countries around the world gathered at Phuket Graceland Resort and Spa for the 7th International Symposium of High Temperature Air Combustion and Gasification or HiTACG 2008. The conference was organized by the Waste Incineration Research Centre of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology North Bangkok, in collaboration with The Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment and Sustainable Energy Research Centre of Phranakhon Rajabhat University. The event was held in conjunction with the 2nd National Conference on Biomass and Waste Gasification for Power Generation, during 13 – 16 January, 2008 in Phuket, Thailand. The area of conference expands to cover the application of High Temperature Air Combustion and Gasification for Sustainable Bio-energy Development. Consequently, the theme of symposium was "HiTACG for Sustainable Bioenergy Development". The meeting provides a forum for participants to share experiences and research work which in turn should lead to international cooperation.

Over the next six months, Marriott International Incorporated has announced it will have 3 more locations in Phuket, in addition to its Resort & Spa at Mai Khao beach. The openings will bring Marriott’s portfolio to 11 operating hotels and resorts in Thailand with another 7 hotels and resorts planned to open through 2010. The 3 opening properties are the 256-room Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Surin Beach opening 1st quarter 2008, the 399-room Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Patong Beach opening 2nd quarter 2008, and the 180-room Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Kamala Beach opening 2nd quarter 2008. All are conversions of existing hotels and are currently undergoing extensive renovations designed to make them appealing to upper-moderate- and lower-upscale-minded travelers who value functionality, safety and comfort. They will be joined later in 2010 by the Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa at Kamala Cove and the Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa in Mai Khao. They expect to be the largest international lodging brand company represented in Phuket.

Following the success of “the Clean Beach White Sand” project, JW Marriott also informed Andaman News that the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation has launched six new environmental projects to show its commitment to the environment. This year the Foundation in conjunction with JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa and Phuket Rajabhat University launches its “Environmental Awareness and Solutions Project” which will take place every two months starting in January. The events comprise education and practice in the form of school workshops, environmental management projects and action clean ups. The Foundation’s events for 2008 include in January a Rubbish Management Workshop and Mai Khao Beach & Reef clean up; in March a Turtle Fun Run and Educational Day; in May a Tree Planting Project in the Mai Khao area; in July a Managing Our Beach Environment Workshop; in September an Earth Hour – Save Energy for Just One Hour; in November a Managing Our Community Environment Workshop. MiniVDO: Phuket has over 1,700 new job vacancies

With a large number of job employment offered by businesses in Phuket, the provincial Employment Office is holding a ‘Job Fair’ on Thursday January 17th at a Community Hall. The chief of the provincial Employment Office Nattaya Anudit said the fair provides an opportunity for potential employers and job seekers to meet and hopefully lead to employment. 45 businesses are confirmed to attend for interviews with around 1,700 employees needed. Job seekers are advised to bring related papers when attending the fair.

MiniVDO: Illegal workers were caught in Phang-Nga while attempting to enter by boat.

A total of 195 foreign workers were caught by Phang-Nga Marine police while attempting to come ashore in Phang-Nga. The group were spotted by a Thai fishing vessel who then notified police. After being informed, the Marine Police went to inspect and found suspicious boats on the west side of Koh Ra in Kura Buri district and found a number of men on board. They they told the boat to come ashore at Kura Buri. Meanwhile, another team spotted another boat with illegal migrants, reported to be a ‘Rohingya’ tribe group so they were brought to the same place. Initial reports indicated that the group tried to get in to work in Thailand and Malaysia, but got spotted by Thai fishing boats so they ended up arrested.

The Software Industry Promotion Agency or SIPA Phuket Office manager Dr. Ratana Wesprasit held a meeting with applicants, who proposed to produce their animation work, to explain criteria and rules for the animation and multi-media work they want to submit for scholarships. The activity was arranged to promote such industry and support animators or those who are working or interested in the multimedia field. The title or themes are rated by government offices, nonprofit organization for a cooperate image or campaign to benefit the society. The SIPA Phuket is now opens for amateur animators to prepare proposals and present their work for funding.
