I'm from (and in) sydney. Quite a few years ago, i attended a beginner's short course taught through WEA. You could perhaps seek out a course like this and then approach the teacher for private lessons. Also, you could try putting up a notice at one of the many Thai grocery/video shops around the Chinatown area for a teacher or a language exchange. The various Thai community newspapers are another way to find someone.

Just from memory, the University of Sydney also teaches Thai up to a certain level. Apart from that, the Australian National University in Canberra is really the bees knees for Asian Languages:

It's just possible that they might have a summer program or short course that could work for you.

All the best.

Good News :D There are even certain locations in Sydney where english is spoken too :o Nignoy

Thank Aanon, these are very good suggestion. I just checked the WEA sydney and found out that they no longer have Thai course.

As for the universities, I'll do some research. They sounds pretty expensive. But thanks for your help.

Nignoy, lol yeah i take it as there are certain area where thai is spoken. :o

well, there are cantonese-speaking areas, vietnamese areas and arabic-speaking areas, but no thai-speaking areas that i know of, except for inside the thai shops and restaurants themselves.

something i only found out recently: the haymarket library has a pretty good stock of thai books available for anyone to borrow. you just need to join the library (about $15).

all the best.

There is a Thai language and culture School operating in Sydney (Redfern) on Sundays, from 10am onwards. Corner of Cleveland st and Chalmers St.

The school seems to be orientated around teaching children but they're happy to have adults along.

There are three levels of language classes, the first is like kinderdergarten teaching the Thai consonants. Second level class is learning to read and write. And there is a more advanced conversation class above this which is all adults.

After the language classes there are Thai music and dancing classes for the kids.

I'm finding it really good, I've tried to learn to read/write Thai many times before but this is the first time I've moved on much from learning the consonants. The school is run as a charity so tuition is cheap.

I believe some of the Thai temples in Sydney also run some language classes.

I did the first year of the Thai course at Sydney Uni a long way back, it was good but very expensive, I don’t believe it’s running any more. You can still buy the textbook with audio CD from http://www.anu.edu.au/ThaiOnline/NTSC/Publ...ublications.htm it’s quite good.

Also, there is a Thai Radio program in Sydney see http://www.2000fm.com/thai/index.htm

Regards,

Herbie.
