Ie - Thumbnail View Instead Of Icon

Can anyone help me???

Before I upgraded my computer to WinXP Pro & IE7, I used to see a Thumbnail of Web Pages instead of the IE "e" Icon when I'm using Thumbnail View in Explorer Folder... (My old laptop had only XP Home and IE6.5)

Now I can only see the "e" icon... What happened? I can't find any switch to turn on the Web-page Icon view.

Perhaps because, at least for me I don't fully understand what you are asking. Thumbnail view provides image only previews, I don't recall ever seeing html pages displayed as rendered images within Windows Explorer. The functionality in Internet Explorer was, I think, an add-in, and so may not be available within IE7. I seem to recall that IE7 has a specific Thumbnail Button but, I'm not sure that's what you want. Haven't used IE for yonks, so sorry I can't be more helpful. Perhaps you could provide a more detailed description to clarify?

im also a tad confused, when you say you viewed web pages as thumbs does that mean that you actually downloaded the pages for off-line viewing or are you talking bout your favourites??

The only way you woul be able to view anything as a thumbnail is to actually have the file on your PC or in your Temp Internet files chache

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

On my old computer, When I added a Favorites shortcut link or even 'Saved' a web page as an HTML page, I could go to Windows Explorer and when using "Thumbnails" view in the Explorer window, the "e" icon would show up as a "snapshot" of the webpage. This would usually be instantaneous when the page was saved, and take a few seconds when the link was a Web shortcut, as the page was downloaded into Thumbnail view.

It is the same effect as when you look at a .pdf link in Win Explorer "Thumbnail View" and the Adobe Reader application renders the icon as a Thimbnail view, or a .jpeg is viewed as a thumbnail image.

This works fine for Web links on my old Viao Laptop with XP Home SP2 and IE6.5, but does Not work on this new XP Pro SP2 and IE7

Any Ideas???

was it not a 3rd party app..iv tried a view things and yeah your right..pics pdf's i can see in thumbnail but i cant see web pages...

Iv tried hunting round the net cant see anything that can do that..was it not power toys?

I'm aware of Power Toys, but I can't recall ever installing any of their add-ons... maybe this was a feature in IE6 & 6.5 that never migrated into IE7. But I sure miss it.

IIRC this was removed due to security risks of bad HTML code. It may be a small thumbnail you see in the end, but it still had to render the html to create it.

Nevertheless, you *should* be able to bring it back by restorting the shell handlers for those filetypes. The fix below should also restore thumbnails for AVI files, MPEG files and a few others.

First, make sure windows is set to show file extensions. In My Computer / Explorer, go to Tools > Folder Options. Go to the View tab and make sure "Hide extensions for known filetypes" is unchecked. Then you can

1) Download the attached text file and rename it from "htmlthumbs.reg.txt" --> "htmlthumbs.reg"

2) Run the file and allow it to be added to the registry.

OR

1) Create a new text file on the desktop called thumbs.txt or something similar

2) Edit the text file and past the following text from the code box (do not include the START and STOP lines):

3) Rename your thumbs.txt to thumbs.reg

4) Run the file and allow it to be added to the registry.
