I would really appreciate some help with VAF4 Question 5.13

"Have you engaged in any other activities that might indicate you may not be a person of good character"

I am struggling with what they are really after ? "good character" the preceding questions are criminal convictions terrorist and genocide ...

Any thoughts or guidance very welcome

Has she ever worked as a prostitute?

Thanks guys just needed a little reassurance.

The only time I really heard this phrase before was when my barrister said it about me and it meant no previous convictions and I am still a man of good character.

Although it has 2 questions, any convictions? waiting on any convictions

Its the "might" "may indicate" that's slightly worrying. If I answer yes I have answers why she is of good character.

Yes actually she had worked in a bar for 3 weeks, that was over a year ago. I am not trying to hide that merely answer the question truthfully.

I have already been told by an OISC adviser

" Firstly having worked in a bar is no barrier whatsoever to getting a visa "

I was going to deal with all this in 6.4.3, where did you meet?

In my book, working in a bar is not being engaged in an activity “that might indicate you may not be a person of good character”. Otherwise, every person walking or driving in Thailand would fall into this category, as they might contravene some traffic regulation and thus their activity (walking, driving) might indicate that they may not be a person of good character.

They are asking just that, 'Is she of good character', been in jail, in trouble with the Police, fraud etc

Has she ever worked as a prostitute?

Unsure of your intent here backflip, are you suggesting that being a Prostitute is of questionable character? I do not think so.

This is my understanding as well.

Good Luck

Not related to the OP's question. With all due respect can I dare to ask one question?

If working as a prostitute does not constitute as having a questionable character, then what do you call the behavior of such girls/boys who work as prostitutes? :o

Paragraph 320(19) of the Immigration Rules allows a visa officer to refuse a visa on the basis that either the applicant's character, conduct or associations makes their exclusion conducive to the public good, and it is this that the cited question on the application form is getting at.

However, before the visa officer refuses on such grounds, he has to demonstrate that the public good will be served. He can't simply impose his own morality and refuse someone because he does not like what they do. In the case of prostitution, they would have to demonstrate that the individual will be continuing to operate as such in the UK.

I quite agree, but when applied to this response,

Has she ever worked as a prostitute?

It certainly has relevance.

Yes, you can ask as many as you want, but lets be careful we don't breach forum rules here.

If working as a prostitute does not constitute as having a questionable character,

I see no reason, why people who choose a particular stream of income, many times through circumstance outside their control, should be classed as questionable in character, they haven't robbed anybody or murdered someone, they have made a contract between to consenting adults, one has made an offer, the other has accepted, as long as the deal has been carried out in line with the contract, there is no breach and as such, there is nothing questionable about said character.

As far as I am aware, there is nothing in Immigration Law that prohibits people who work in bars, in whatever function, from getting a visa, as long as they fulfill the relevant criteria.

then what do you call the behaviour of such girls/boys who work as prostitutes? :o

I can only presume, that by using the terminology of girls/boys, you mean children below the Age of Consent, so I would call it abuse and clients the arrested.

The U.S. Government has a 9-page "Questionaire for Sensitive Positions" form that's used to review people for security clearances, the SF-86.

Question 24a reads:  "Do you now use, or within the last 5 years have you used, alcholic beverages habitually to excess?"

Hmmm, that's pretty judgemental, last time I filled one of these out, 1987, I answered "no," with a Singha in my other hand!  Or was it a Stella?

Whichever it was, let's hope you didn't spill it on the form. :o
