Thai court sentences Taiwanese men to death, life in prison for drug offenses

A Thai court has sentenced three Taiwanese men to death and another three to life in prison following their arrest last year on drug trafficking charges, an official said Monday.

The six men, ranging in age from 24 to 50, were arrested on Sept. 13, 2003, when police stopped their van and seized 11.7 kilograms (26 pounds) of heroin they allegedly planned to ship out of the country through the Gulf of Thailand.

The men, whose names were unclear from court records, were arrested while driving to the southeastern resort town of Pattaya, a court official said on condition of anonymity.

He said three of the men were initially sentenced to death but had their punishment reduced by the Criminal Court on Friday because they pleaded guilty and cooperated during the trial. The other three men had pleaded not guilty.

Just shows how dangerous it can be to plead not guilty, doesn't it! :o
