My Non-Immigrant Visa B (multiple) expires next month and I wondered if an extension can be obtained from the immigration department?. If so, for how long and at what cost?

Immigration does not work on "impending". Unless you have firm paperwork and a job/work permit and meet the conditions believe you have little chance of an extension of stay. You are also not likely to receive a B visa from any local Consulate without such paperwork to include at least a work permit receipt.
