I was in Songkhla Province last week for a bit of a look around. It definitely gets an undeserved rap and I encourage all adventurers to go and check out Hat Yai and Songkhla cities.

Whilst in Hat Yai I went to the GL Sauna, whilst it was a bit of an effort to find it; I was well rewarded.

The sauna is on 2 levels the first being the wet area and gym. Upstairs is a bar and through on the otherside of that space are cubicles.

The place is clean and well appointed and the Thai patrons are very enthusiastic, as are the staff I might add.

Entry price is okay I suppose, I was charged 250 baht but it did include a free drink. Having paid 1900 for my 30 day visa extension earlier in the day, I was feeling a little skint.

There are also a number of gay bars in town but I will have to check them out next time I am down that way; that is of course if I can tear myself away from GL Sauna.

Sounds good. I hadn't realised that there was a sauna there. Is it advertised on Utopia? Spartacus?

Are there any other saunas in the south apart from Phuket?

The GL sauna in Hat Yai is the only one that I have found so far. I don't recall what web site I found it on, but it also mentioned a few bars. One of which looked as if it had closed down but the other is near the entrance to GL but was not open on the night I was in town. (or maybe had already closed by the time I left the sauna).

Does anyone now of any venues in Nakhon si Thamarat?

I am thinking of having 3-4 days in the south. I have done Phuket and Krabi, so I was thinking of Hat Yai or similar and move around.

I see that there is a sauna.

Are there other places which have saunas, gay-friendly hotels, gay bars? I know that it is possible to meet new friends in Robinson's (even), but I was thinking of a place which has a bit of gay life.

Where did you guys stay?

There are at least three boy bars in town, the best of which being G-Men (at least when was there two years ago). They are all within walking distance one from another, which is very convenient.

My hotel of choice is Florida Hotel in the southern part of town which is very cheap, clean, close to the bars and not too far from town centre.

To get to GL Sauna and a few more of the new (I think) gay venues, I understand from my Thai friends that if you are facing the Diana shopping centre, walk to the small traffic light on your right and turn left at the junction, into the road there - I think it's Sriphuvanart Road (pronounced See-poo-fun-nut) - the sauna is off one of the small sois just a little bit further down. Also along that road are a number of men's massage places and gay bars, my friend said.

I didn't have time to check out anything for myself as I was working and meeting up with relatives but I was also informed that the Florida Hotel is a good starting point since it is nearer to Diana shopping centre and there are also a few PLU places near it.

If you are staying at the more upscale places, it is a long way down the road from the Asian Hotel and Diamond Plaza, but you can just take a tuk-tuk from in front of the Asian Hotel and head straight to Diana from there. Same road but long, long way away - if you are staying at Diamond Plaza, cross the road to Asian Hotel because it's one-way traffic and you could lose your bearings if the tuk-tuk had to make a U-turn.

After dinner with my relatives, I had a quick look at the infamous railway station that was THE cruising spot years ago, but it looked completely deserted from the outside so I didn't bother hanging around. Next time I go back, I'll check the little entrance to the tracks inside (where most of the action was) more thoroughly.

I hope this helps.

PS

Buddy's has moved. I don't know where but I was told its new premises was near Florida Hotel, too.
