I've been playing the R/T strategy game Age of Kings (Conquerors version) for years, since it was released. Never had a problem until a few weeks back and all of a sudden the computer closes down while playing. It doesn't crash, everything closes nicely and it restarts without any problems.

I've done all the usual stuff; system restore, deleted the latest upgrade....

There's no set pattern, it could close ten minutes into the game or an hour.

I know some laptops are prone to overheating.

But thats allI know

Yep, I'd agree with both parts of that statement mate :o

Scea, do you play this game a lot? if so it may just be a coincidence.

The usual reason for any software just closing by itself is the system has been compromised in some way..... is your spyware/virus software up to date.

Yep, most likely heat. When's the last time you've attacked the dust bunnies inside your 'puter? Don't forget those that settle in the PSU also.

Thanks Thad, I usually get one game in a day and it's the only proper game I play if you don't count the stuff like FreeCell.

I've got McAfee AV as well as Windows and they seem to keep updated.

I'm inclined to go with the over heating theory, if the dust and crap that collects on the screen and keyboard is any indication of what's inside that could well be the problem.

Surprising part is it's not the game closing or locking up but everything turning off normally.

That can be because of the Bios. It's possible that the system bios down the laptop if the heat reaches some temperature. I have the same in my Laptop (Acer). You can just buy some Laptop Cooling System for THB 200 up which is placed below the Laptop, connected to an USB port and the fan's cooling the Laptop from below!

To sort out that Heat is the problem, Just place a normal Fan beside of the a bit lifted Laptop and start to play. If the Laptop didn't go down, you get your answer.

Cheers.

If it's a laptop, when you take the bottom cover for the CPU off to clean out the junk, make sure you have some 90+% pure alchol to clean off your old compound. Also pay attention to your vents, since quite a bit of crap can get piled up there and prevent air from being forced out.
