I am currently working as a teacher and have a work permit and Non-imm B. The process for the non imm B was a run to Malaysia, a provisional 3 months given and then, once my permit was all in place, a check in every 3 months at my local immigration office. I am soon to be starting a new job where they will be organising me a work permit and a 'business visa'. I have tried searching but cannot find a visa that matches this description. What is it? I have been told that I will have to do visa runs to Malaysia every 3 months (so it is not the same as the non-B I have now) and that my process won't be affected by the new tighter regs (so is therefore not a 90 day tourist visa). Can anyone tell me what visa I will have and the conditions attached? I ideally want to know if I would be able to get financing on a car with it...

Cheers

You presently seem to have a one year extension of stay rather than a non immigrant B visa (you had that for entry but your 90 day stay was extended at Immigration). You are thus making 90 day address reports to immigration because you are not leaving the country.

Your new job will require a non immigrant B visa and after work permit is issued you should be able to obtain a multi entry non immigrant B visa for overseas Consulate. This will require exit of country every 90 days and reactivation of work permit after your return. This is a lower status than the one year extension of stay (can not lead to PR) and have no idea if you can obtain credit to buy car.

It may be possible to get the 90 day b visa and then get an extension for one year just like you did before. You would need to meet the requirements for an extension of stay based on working, just like you did before.

Thanks for your responses, seems a little clearer now.

I think the reason I was allowed to extend was that I was working as a teacher - as I understand the rules are most generous towards teachers. I will not be teaching in my next job, however will look into to an extension as this would certainly make my bosses life easier - currently paying for 6 visa runs every 3 months!
