Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung's son Wan is slated to become the assistant secretary to Deputy Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul. The appointment will be formalised in tomorrow's Cabinet meeting. "In the past, society saw this boy in a scary way but I see him as a well-mannered and polite boy," Chaiya said. He compared Wan to Ong Kuliman, a notorious bandit in the Buddhist scriptures who reformed and reached enlightenment. He said he would designate Wan as a presenter in the awareness campaign against drinking and smoking, praising him as role model who has turned to public service after involving in pub brawls. Only this time get a double bonus, as the Chalerm boys add to the patient numbers using trademark bottling, shooting and fisticuffs. Actually, it really is quite clever. Wan smashes up someone, but then only has to pay 30b to get their wounds sorted. It is much cheaper than how they used to do it. In a bid to downplay public criticism of the planned appointment of Wan, Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsab yesterday likened him to Angulimala, a character in the Buddhist Tipataka who was deceived by his teacher into killing 1,000 people. Still, Chavarat said yesterday that he had not known about Wan's nomination for the job. It is reported that the nominations for the posts of Secretary and Adviser to cabinet ministers resulted from negotiations between Chalerm and former TRT MPs for Bangkok led by Sudarat Keyuraphan. *Among his other exploits, * Wan, formerly called Wanchalerm, was involved in a brawl at a Bangkok nightclub in 2001. He was convicted of assault in 2004 and banned from entering entertainment venues for 2 years. Wan violated the ban the following year and got involved in a pub fight again, prompting the Criminal Court to extend his probation period to 2007 and order him to do 48 hours of community service. His younger brother Duang was charged with the fatal shooting of a police officer during a brawl in a Bangkok pub. Speaking to reporters at his house in Bang Bon district yesterday, Mr Chalerm made a wai and said he wanted to apologise to the public for the negative image of him and his family. He would make up for it by working hard. He said his three sons, Artharn, Wan, and Duang, would not be given any positions at the Interior Ministry. The three sons have had a number of brushes with the law. His youngest son, Duang, who worked for a military intelligence unit, was charged with killing a Crime Suppression Division detective at a Bangkok club seven years ago. He went into hiding for six months before being dismissed by the Supreme Command for missing work. He was later acquitted of the murder charge because of a lack of evidence. Artharn and Wan joined the police in 1999 as sub-lieutenants in legal and public affairs. They had to leave the force two years later for filing fake military exemption documents in their applications. National police chief Pol Gen Seripisuth Temiyavej proposed their dismissal while he was an assistant police chief. The army ran checks and confirmed the two sons had dodged conscription and used fake military exemption papers. The two men were later stripped of their police rank. At one point, a court banned Mr Wan from entering entertainment venues for two years for his involvement in pub brawls and taking firearms inside them. Mr Chalerm himself was also embroiled in a legal wrangle. The retired police captain was taken to court for directing defamatory remarks at the Royal Thai Police and Pol Col Manthan Abhaiwong, superintendent of Thong Lor police station on the night of Oct 12, 2000. Mr Chalerm had allegedly said that 70% of the police force were bad and all metropolitan police stations had allowed dealings in methamphetamine pills, did not stop entertainment venues in their areas of jurisdiction from staying open beyond the specified hours, and also allowed extortion to prevail. Mr Chalerm later apologised to the police force which dropped the case. On his first day at work yesterday, Mr Chalerm insisted he knew he was the right man for the job of interior minister and he had waited to take the helm of the ministry for decades. His priorities would be to suppress narcotics, restore peace in the far South, and protect national forests. He guaranteed his work would be transparent and welcomed scrutiny from the opposition. He said he would not unfairly remove provincial governors but planned to revive the policy of CEO governors aimed at giving them more pro-active roles. This is what chalerm declared on 8 february.That mean he even can't be honest for 4 days.Do they call that cleaning up the family image?Are thai people realy deaf and blind. Wan was a co-defendant in his brother Duang's murder case. He was alleged to have held the policeman down on the floor while his brother shot him in the head. Wan was also a co-defendant with his other brother, Artharn, in forging Army draft documents that enabled him to skip out having to serve. They were kicked off the police force for that one. (yep, they were policemen) ============================================== As for the name changes... that happened four years ago and they were changed in order to "hide" their identity better... The Nation / March 25, 2004 His father, veteran politician Chalerm Yoobamrung, recently changed his son’s name from Duangchalerm to Duang because he believed the boy would have a brighter future without the unwanted attention the name had brought him. He also changed the name of his other son, Wanchalerm, to Wan, although the surname remains the same. slapout Posted February 13, 2008 Share Posted February 13, 2008 Is there not a provision in the new constitution that, spouse, children, etc of Ministers cannot hold positions in government? The whole new lineup of Ministers reminds me of the Capone, Shultz, Marcello, and other fine examples of society in another era. Maybe the failure to pay tax charges, currently being sought against the esteemed former PM should be expanded. This seems the only way to get them out of power, as muder, bribery, drug related offenses, insider trading, gambling operations, election shinnigans, etc seem to hit stone walls in most cases. I can understand this father's desire to 'help' his kids and with his connections, I am sure he could find him a suitable position in the private sector where he could maybe truly rehabilitate himself. If he has, as was posted, been kicked off the police force, there should be some law, rule, regulation that would disallow his being in a paid gov't position. One would think? Truly sad.
