Poem To Remember Mid-class Consonats

Featured Replies

This is the poem Thai children use to remember the middle class consonants.

ไก่ จิก เด็ก ตาย บน ปาก อ่าง

Gai Jik dek dtang bon bpak ang

low low low mid mid low low

will give the one for high class when I have time.

Edited typo. /Meadish

There are 9 mid class consonants not 7.

I see ฎ and ฏ could be seen to be the same as ด

ฅาย should be ตาย. You've accidentally used the very similar-looking but obsolete letter ฅ คน instead of ต เต่า.

Thanks, the virtual keyboard I use is so small it is hard to make out the characters.

the meaning of the poem is

ไก่ จิก เด็ก ฅาย บน ปาก อ่าง

Gai Jik dek dtang bon bpak ang

chicken peck children die on mouth of large ceramic bottle= the chicked pecked the children to death on the mouth of the container.

teh peoem helps to remember teh common consonants, the other two need to be remembered separately.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I've also heard this with ปากโอ่ง instead of ปากอ่าง.

Actually you are right, I just checked the dictionary. โอ่ง means earthen jar - which is the correct word whereas อ่าง means tub or basin.

My thai teacher must have spelt it wrong.
